A routine Instacart delivery in downtown Atlanta turned into every parent’s worst nightmare when a mother returned to find her vehicle gone with her 2-year-old daughter still strapped into the back seat. Within seconds, what began as a vehicle theft became a desperate race to find a missing child.
The mother immediately called 911, telling the dispatcher that someone had driven away with both her car and her toddler still inside. The terrifying ordeal prompted an urgent response from Atlanta police, who quickly launched a citywide search.
According to the Atlanta Police Department, officers located the stolen vehicle, the child, and the suspect in less than 15 minutes. The little girl was rescued unharmed and safely reunited with her parents, bringing a frightening ordeal to a swift end.
Police have since released the 911 call and bodycam footage from the rescue, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the moments officers tracked down the vehicle and brought the young child safely back to her family.
A Mother’s Desperate 911 Call Set the Search in Motion
The video released by the Atlanta Police Department opens with the child’s mother making a frantic 911 call, telling the dispatcher she had just returned to her vehicle at 930 Spring St. NW after dropping off an Instacart order, only to discover that someone had driven away with her car and her 2-year-old daughter still strapped into the back seat.
“You said your daughter’s inside the vehicle?” the dispatcher asks.
“Yes, and my 2-year-old daughter was in the backseat,” the mother replies. “I was dropping off an Instacart order and I came back outside. And so my car is gone. And my daughter was inside.”
As officers rushed to locate the vehicle, dispatchers worked to relay critical information to patrol units across the city. The bodycam footage then shifts to the moment officers spotted the stolen vehicle and moved in to stop the suspect. With weapons drawn, officers ordered the driver to raise his hands before taking him into custody without further incident.
Moments later, one officer opened the vehicle and turned his attention to the frightened toddler still sitting inside. “It’s okay, baby,” the officer says as he reassures the little girl. Seconds later, another officer confirmed the outcome over the radio: “The child is okay.” For the family, the words marked the end of what had been an unimaginable few minutes.
Technology Helped Officers Find the Vehicle in Less Than 15 Minutes
While patrol officers responded to the emergency call, investigators with the Atlanta Police Department’s Auto Crimes Enforcement Unit immediately began searching for the stolen vehicle. With a 2-year-old child still inside, every passing minute increased the urgency of the search.
Atlanta police say officers used the city’s network of license plate readers to track the vehicle’s movements. The technology allowed investigators to quickly identify where the vehicle had traveled, giving officers a crucial lead as they worked to locate both the suspect and the missing toddler.
The strategy paid off in less than 15 minutes. Police located the stolen vehicle, safely recovered the child, and arrested 21-year-old Saleem Martin. Authorities later charged Martin with kidnapping, theft by taking, simple battery, entering an automobile, cruelty to children, and criminal attempt to commit a felony. As with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations, and Martin is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
For Atlanta police, the case highlighted how technology and coordinated police work can dramatically shorten the time it takes to recover stolen vehicles. More importantly, it allowed officers to reunite a frightened 2-year-old with her parents before the situation had a chance to become even more dangerous.
The Rescue Drew Praise, but Many Also Questioned the Mother’s Decision
After Atlanta Police released the dispatch audio and bodycam footage, viewers praised the officers for locating the stolen vehicle and rescuing the toddler before she was harmed. Many credited the department’s rapid response and coordinated search with preventing what could have become a tragedy.
“Great job, ACE!!!” one commenter wrote, referring to the department’s Auto Crimes Enforcement Unit. Others echoed that sentiment with messages such as, “Great job APD…” and “They saved that baby!!!” Several viewers also praised the bodycam footage, saying it showed just how quickly officers moved once the vehicle was located.
At the same time, the incident sparked a separate debate about the circumstances leading up to the theft. A number of commenters questioned why the child had been left inside the running vehicle while the delivery was being made. “Why was her daughter left inside the car?” one person asked. Another wrote, “So many questions about mom….”
Others went even further, arguing the mother should also face consequences for leaving the toddler unattended. While opinions varied, many agreed the case served as a reminder of how quickly an ordinary errand can turn into an emergency when a running vehicle is left unattended, even for a brief moment.
