A Thursday night in Louisville’s Beechmont neighborhood turned chaotic when a string of fires broke out along one residential alley, sending crews from four engine companies and two truck companies racing to contain the flames before they spread further.

The Louisville Fire Department says the call came in around 8 p.m. for reports of multiple fires in the alley near the 200 block of Ottawa Avenue, reported WLKY News. When firefighters arrived just minutes later, they found several detached garages already burning, along with a handful of separate trash fires scattered throughout the alley.

Thankfully, this story has a mostly good ending on the emergency response side. Crews moved quickly, splitting up to fight the fires simultaneously rather than tackling them one at a time, and had everything under control within about an hour. Neighbors also helped by pointing out smaller spot fires crews might have otherwise missed, helping stop them from spreading to nearby structures or vehicles.

By the time the smoke cleared, a total of 32 firefighters had responded, and nobody was hurt. Given how many separate fires were burning at once in a tight alley setting, that’s no small feat.

What Investigators Found

Because of the number of fires and reports of suspicious behavior in the area, arson investigators were brought in alongside the regular fire crews. That led to the arrest of 44-year-old Christina Hargrove, who now faces two counts of arson and eight counts of wanton endangerment.

She’s currently being held at LMDC on a $250,000 bond, and the case remains under active investigation.

A Wild Scene in the Courtroom

If the fires themselves weren’t enough drama for one week, Hargrove’s arraignment on Friday morning added another chapter. Court audio captured her telling the judge the charges against her were “ridiculous,” using some language we won’t repeat here.

The judge responded, “Ridiculous charges? Okay,” before later telling the room she’d “run out of patience” before 10 a.m. and wondering aloud whether Mercury was in retrograde.

For those unfamiliar with the reference, Mercury retrograde is an astrological event that astrology enthusiasts often associate with communication mix-ups, delays, misunderstandings, and generally chaotic days. The judge appeared to be using the phrase as a lighthearted way to describe a particularly eventful morning in court rather than making a serious astrological observation.

The Louisville Fire Department’s Arson Bureau continues to investigate the incident.

As it turns out, Mercury was not in retrograde, despite the judge’s suspicions.
