A Dublin driver  who threatened to smash another driver’s window with a hammer after a road accident has pleaded guilty, telling the court he knew straight away it was a “stupid mistake.” Cillian Gleeson, 23, admitted producing the hammer as a weapon during the dispute. His sentence is now on hold while the court weighs what to do with him.

The trouble started on September 4, 2025, at Thornwood Estate on Beaumont Road in Dublin, according to the Irish Independent. Gleeson had just been in a road accident with another driver, who then drove off rather than stop. He followed the other car, and when it finally pulled over, he got out to confront the driver.

He threatened to break the man’s window, then went back to his own car and grabbed a hammer that was sitting inside. Almost as soon as he had it in his hand, Gleeson knew he had crossed a line. He put the hammer back, and when the police arrived, he told them exactly where it was in the car.

The whole confrontation was caught on dashcam, and once that footage reached police, they arrested and charged Gleeson. He admitted what he had done rather than contest it. The case then came before Judge Michele Finan at Dublin District Court.

How the Court Saw It

Judge Finan left no doubt that she viewed the threat as a very serious incident, and she told the court she was weighing all of her options. Those ran from a jail sentence at one end to a far more lenient resolution at the other. Producing a weapon in a roadside argument was never going to be brushed aside, no matter how quickly Gleeson backed off.

Still, Gleeson had a lot working in his favor. He had no previous convictions, and he had stayed out of trouble in the months since. The judge also credited his guilty plea and the good decisions he had made along the way, leaving the courtroom to consider something other than a straight penalty.

What Happens to Gleeson Now

Rather than sentence him on the spot, Judge Finan adjourned the case for two reports. The first is a victim impact statement, if the other driver wants to give one. The second is a restorative justice assessment, which weighs whether Gleeson and the man he threatened can resolve their dispute between themselves rather than through a standard punishment.

Finan was clear that the victim’s wishes are the most important consideration when determining what comes next. Gleeson was released on continuing bail and is due back in court in September. Fortunately for him, his quick about-face and clean record have left the door open to a far lighter outcome than the one he was staring at.
