The Texas Department of Public Safety posted a video to Facebook that features police officers performing a PIT maneuver on a vehicle that had attempted to flee a traffic stop.
At first, the driver of the black Nissan Altima had actually stopped on the side of the road when police signaled him down. The video appears to be taken from the point of view of the police car’s dashcam before switching to a female officer’s body camera.
The driver was informed by the officer that he had been going 35 miles over the speed limit. However, just when she asked for his information so she could write him a ticket, he booked it.
The other officer that she was with had also stepped out of the vehicle, so it took a moment before they were able to begin pursuit.
Texas Fugitive Chased by Cops
Once officers were on the move, they chased down the Nissan Altima for a short while. Eventually, another police vehicle came and joined the pursuit.
The driver continued to evade police as well as other vehicles as he swerved through what looked to be a residential neighborhood.
The second Texas DPS Trooper who arrived was able to perform the PIT maneuver that ultimately brought the chase to an end. Because the car landed in an empty field, no homes, cars, or bystanders were injured.
Not His First Run-in With the Law
Once the suspect was apprehended by police, he was charged with Felony Failure to Identify – Fugitive and Evading Arrest. It was also revealed that he had two active warrants from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s office.
His active warrants are likely the reason that he fled the scene, despite it being a simple traffic stop. If convicted, the driver faces a maximum of 14 years in prison and nearly $30,000 in fines.
Some commenters agree with this sentiment, with one person in particular writing, “Bro just a speeding ticket .”
Reactions to Texas Cops Chasing Down a Fugitive
Similar to the comment above, other commenters found the situation to be rather ridiculous. Another comment read, “Good thing he had his hazard lights on,” in reference to the Nissan Altima’s hazard lights being on for the duration of the chase.
Other users were more focused on the officer who performed the PIT. In regard to this, one user wrote, “Very nice pit! All that for a speeding ticket? Maybe he was under the influence of something
.”
The video itself was shared to Facebook as a demonstration of how the PIT maneuver works in an everyday setting.
