A Republican state representative from Hernando, Mississippi, was recently arrested on multiple charges, including driving under the influence and reckless driving. He has apologized since and explained that he was rushing to see his granddaughter at a local hospital.

As reported by WAPT, the incident occurred on Friday, May 15. State Rep. Jeff Hale was pulled over by Hernando Police Department officers for speeding and was subsequently placed under arrest.

Mississippi Today detailed that Rep. Hale was charged with driving under the influence (his first), reckless driving, speeding, and disorderly conduct. He posted his $1,500 bond and was released from the DeSoto County Adult Detention Facility.

Hale, a Republican member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, has represented District 24 since 2016.

State Rep. Explains, Apologizes

Following Hale’s arrest, the Mississippi rep shared a statement, explaining what had occurred on May 15, denying the allegations.

According to him, he received an emergency phone call from his son and daughter-in-law. He claims he learned that his granddaughter had fallen unconscious and was not breathing. Knowing that the young child was on the way to the hospital, he “reacted as the first responder I had been for more than 20 years.”

“While driving to the hospital, I was providing emergency instructions through my wife over the phone in an effort to help my granddaughter,” Rep. Hale added.

While he denied being under the influence of any substances, Hale apologized to the Hernando Police Department and the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office. He explained, “That night, they encountered a terrified grandfather whose only concern was reaching the hospital as quickly as possible.”

Public Reacts to Lawmaker’s DUI Arrest

News of the arrest quickly became public, and Rep. Hale’s mugshot was shared on multiple outlets and local social media groups. While some users supported Hale, fully believing his post-release statement, others were more skeptical.

Citizens criticized Hale and the system, fully believing he would face no consequences for his alleged actions. Some even pointed out the case of DeSoto Judge Karen Sanders, who pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and will serve six months’ probation.

Past Similar Politician DUI Arrests

Hale’s arrest is not the first one of its kind in 2026. Two months prior, in March 2026, Republican South Carolina State Rep. Adam Duncan was arrested on first-offense driving under the influence charges, the South Carolina Daily Gazette reported. Records show that he had a blood alcohol level of less than 0.10%.

Also in March 2026, Republican Minnesota State Rep. Elliott Engen was arrested and later charged with fourth-degree driving while impaired and fourth-degree driving under the influence. Allegedly, Rep. Engen admitted he had two beers before driving, had a weapon in his possession at the time of the DUI stop, and his blood alcohol content measured .13. The legal limit is .08, the Minnesota Reformer reported.
