Two drivers in the Woodward Avenue area of Michigan narrowly avoided slamming into a police officer while going westbound on Interstate 696 near Woodward Avenue. The incidents happened almost one after another during the same overnight traffic stop.

According to the report about the initial traffic crash, it happened on May 16 at around 2:20 in the morning. It was later revealed that the Honda driver was determined not to be impaired. However, the Kia driver was impaired and arrested for doing so on their second offense. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.

The wild video footage released by Michigan State Police shows part of the incident, though not the very first near-hit involving the Honda driver. According to MSP, the trooper had already jumped out of the way once before the released dashcam footage begins.

Both drivers were apprehended and cited for their individual offenses, with MSP Second District also using the incident to remind drivers about Michigan’s Move Over law, which requires motorists to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles stopped on the roadside with flashing lights activated.

According to the caption written for the post, the officer in the video had conducted a traffic stop on a different vehicle when he saw that the Honda in question began hurtling toward him. Police say this was the first time the trooper had to jump out of the way to avoid being struck.

The officer then got into his police vehicle and immediately stopped the Honda going westbound on I-696 just before Main Street. However, this would only be the beginning of the trooper’s problems for the night.

Kia Slams Into Patrol Car During Chaotic I-696 Stop

The video released by MSP begins after the Honda had already been pulled over. Shortly after the officer started speaking with the Honda driver, he noticed another car approaching the traffic stop at high speed.

To avoid getting hit during the second close call, the trooper once again ran out of the roadway moments before the Kia struck the back of the police vehicle, rear-ending it and the Honda in front.

The police cruiser’s dashcam gives viewers a clear view of just how quickly the second incident unfolded. You can see the trooper running around the Honda and jumping over the median just before the impact occurs.

It appears that the driver of the Honda was still seated inside the vehicle when the crash occurred.

Reactions to Michigan Traffic Stop

MSP Second District F/Lt. Mike Shaw commented on the situation, stating, “Definitely a lot going on here. First, if you see an emergency vehicle with its lights on, move over and slow down. Second, it was determined that the driver of the Honda was distracted by trying to adjust her contact lenses while driving. Finally, and I shouldn’t have to say this, there is never a need to drive impaired, ever.”

The 22-year-old female driver of the Honda was identified as being from the North Street area, and the 29-year-old male driver of the Kia was identified as being from Auburn Hills.
