Every petrolhead dreams of being in the best seat in the house, behind the wheel of their very own sports car. But the prospect of owning a luxury vehicle comes with one big fear: its lifespan.

But on one day in 1999, ahead of the new millennium, a man named Mark Blackwell from Jacksonville, Florida, purchased a brand-new 2000 fifth-generation Corvette C5 to commute across the state and make daily interstate drives to Georgia for work.

Even with Corvette’s famed reliability, few would have predicted he’d reach a total of 773,388 miles. When completing the math, that’s roughly over 100 miles a day on average.

Hear From the Driver Himself

Blackwell is no stranger to driving Corvettes, but this particular model lasted nearly twice as long as its predecessor. Purchased brand-new in 1999, it was still going strong 18 years later, despite the staggering mileage on the clock.

“This Corvette has been my mobile office for the last 18 years,” shared Blackwell.

“It’s had a lot of highway miles. My last Corvette had 342,000, and I thought, ‘Well, this one is going to last longer than that one,’ and next thing I knew it was 500,000, [then] 600,000.

“It’s a fabulous car, and no complaints here.”

Almost Disaster Struck, but the C5 Saved the Day

The long commutes and endless highway miles didn’t take their toll on the C5, but Blackwell did recall one near-miss that could have caused serious damage to his beloved car.

Driving in the dark on the highway, he had to swerve left to avoid debris that fell off a semi-truck. He ended up clipping the median and blowing out two tires in the process. Fortunately, there was no lasting damage, but close calls like that are every driver’s fear.

He explained that he had to have the car towed after the tires blew out but believes that in any other car, he would have hit the bumper lying in the middle of the road.

Blackwell’s generosity saw him donate his 18-year-old Corvette to the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Assuming he still lived in Jacksonville at the time of donation, he would have faced nearly a 10-hour drive, and the car would have handled the journey flawlessly, proving just how dependable it remained after almost two decades.

He donated it back in November 2017, and it’s still on display to this day. Before the donation, only minor work was needed to prepare the car for its forever home.

Corvette revealed that the head gasket had to be replaced, but the car still retained its original engine, the iconic LS1 V8.

The car shows only a minor scrape on its front bumper, yet 18 years of careful driving and high mileage produced what is practically a near-perfect example of the model.

  1. Proving that the worst thing you can do to a car, any car, is not drive it. In accounting vehicles and machinery are characterized as “Wasting Assets”. They always depreciate…predictably. So don’t let your beloved C3, C4, C5, etc. suffocate in the garage. Get out there and drive it, or sell it to someone who will.
