Two people were safely rescued after an SUV went over a rock wall embankment in Lynnwood and was left vertically suspended while resting on another car below.
South County Fire said firefighters responded to the incident on 36th Avenue West at around 9:30 a.m., where they found a power pole cable preventing the SUV from sliding farther down.
Before the occupants could be removed, firefighters stabilized the SUV using chains and straps to anchor its axles directly to a ladder truck. Once the vehicle was secured, crews opened the driver’s door and safely rescued both people inside. South County Fire said no one was injured.
Social Media Reacts
Exactly what caused the SUV to go over the embankment was not revealed, but its unusual position subsequently prompted a wave of reaction online, with many commenters expressing disbelief over the scene and others joking about how the vehicle had ended up there.
Images and details of the unusual incident quickly attracted widespread attention online, where one question dominated much of the reaction: how did the SUV end up there?
One commenter joked, “In 500 feet, you’ll arrive at your destination. Proceed to the route.”
“Following GPS?” another added.
Others took inspiration from the SUV’s unusual resting position, with several variations of the same joke appearing in the comments: “You’re not allowed to park there,” “You can’t park there,” and “Hey. You can’t park there!!!”
Another person asked, “How on earth did they manage that…?” while one commenter joked: “Try explaining that one to your insurance company…”
A Big Unanswered Question
Naturally, curiosity kicks in, and commenters offered their own theories about what might have happened, with suggestions ranging from distracted driving and following GPS directions to possible driver error.
Several questioned how a vehicle could have ended up over the rock wall in the first place, while others used the unusual circumstances to warn about the potential dangers of being distracted behind the wheel.
However, none of those theories has been confirmed. South County Fire’s Facebook post focused on the response and rescue and did not provide a cause for the incident or explain what happened in the moments before the SUV went over the embankment.
Relief as Both Occupants Escape Unhurt
Not all of the reactions focused on jokes or theories about what happened. A number of people instead expressed relief that the incident ended without reported injuries.
“Glad everyone is ok, thanks to fire rescue,” one commenter wrote.
Another described the experience as “one scary moment you’ll never forget!”
Others shared similar reactions, with one writing, “How does this even happen? So glad everyone is safe,” while another said, “We were passing by not long after. Glad everyone is ok!”
The comments reflected a mixture of disbelief, humor, and relief following a scene that left many people wondering how the SUV came to be in such an unusual position.
