Woman Arrested for DUI After Parking in Middle of the Street: “How Am I DUI?”

A woman arrested for a DUI in Lawrenceville, Georgia spent time driviing in the wrong lane before eventually coming to a stop in the middle of the road. After she stopped in the street, police body camera footage captured the encounter. The driver simply didn’t understand why she was being arrested.

The dash cam video shows the woman’s vehicle on the wrong side of the road and eventually parking in the middle of it. The body cam video reveals that she couldn’t have been more clueless about what she had actually done while driving under the influence. Simply stopping in the middle of the street didn’t seem to clue her in.

She told the officer that she had not realized she was in the wrong lane. Her explanation, in effect, was that the lane she had ended up in seemed, to her, to be more of a middle lane. The officer then advised that she was being arrested for DUI.

The driver didn’t accept that immediately. She asked how, exactly, she had ended up driving under the influence. That’s actually part of the video that the Lawrenceville police chose to share publicly. They did so as a reminder not to drink and drive, which really shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone at this point.

What the Dash Cam Revealed

Lawrenceville police said the dash camera footage from the responding officer’s patrol vehicle showed the woman’s car traveling on the wrong side of the road. The video then shows the vehicle coming to a stop in the middle of the road. The department did not say what initially drew officers to the scene or how long the car had been there before officers arrived.

The officer’s body camera, in footage shared publicly by the department, captured the conversation that followed with the driver. The woman told the officer she hadn’t been in the wrong lane, at least in her eyes. She described what she’d been driving in as more of a middle lane. In response, the officer placed her under arrest for DUI. The woman didn’t understand, asking how she had been driving under the influence, which seemed more than obvious at the time.

How the Woman Was Eventually Punished

Lawrenceville police didn’t publicly identify the woman, possibly to avoid continuing to shame her for her behavior. The department, in releasing the footage, did frame it as a reminder to drivers not to get behind the wheel after drinking.

Officers added a note that taking an Uber or other type of rideshare home is significantly cheaper than paying bail and towing fees after a DUI arrest. They also added it’s less embarrassing than having to explain your mugshot to your friends. That part could probably have gone without saying, however.
