A man in Texarkana, Texas, is facing multiple charges after he allegedly fled a traffic stop and barricaded himself inside his house. According to local police, the man used a refrigerator and a sofa to keep the front door shut, requiring the response of a SWAT team.

According to a Facebook post made by the Texarkana Texas Police Department, the incident occurred on Monday, June 22. At around 7:45 p.m., police observed a Chevrolet Tahoe on W. 14th Street.

The man behind the wheel, later identified as 40-ýear-old Kelvin Jones, was known by the TTPD. According to the post, he had several felony warrants.

Therefore, TTPD officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The man is accused of not complying with the police.

Refrigerator and Sofa Used

Jones allegedly sped away from the officers. Then, he arrived at his home, located in the 1300 block of Pine Street.

The 40-year-old man left his vehicle and ran inside his home, the TTPD said. The officers tried to prevent this, but the suspect managed to close the door behind him.

The police said that Jones used the weight of his body to keep the door shut. Then, he managed to drag a refrigerator and a sofa and placed both in front of his door, barricading himself. The TTPD called it his “growing home improvement project.”

SWAT Team Responds

Officers attempted to make contact with Jones, telling him to exit his home. Allegedly, he refused and stayed inside.

Shortly after, a SWAT Team responded to the scene. This was due to the man being wanted on multiple felony warrants and listed in the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) as dangerous and armed.

SWAT officers surrounded the man’s house, securing every exit. Then, negotiators managed to convince him to surrender himself to police custody. At 10 p.m., approximately two hours after entering his home, he walked out of his front door and was arrested.

Jailed, Charges

With Jones in custody, TPPD officer inventoried the man’s Tahoe. Inside, they allegedly found methamphetamine and marijuana.

As a result, he was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana. Additionally, he was booked into the Bi-State Jail with warrants for Arkansas parole violation, Texas parole violation, probation violation, evading arrest or detention, and three Texarkana Texas Municipal Court warrants.

“Great work by Officers Miramontes and Huddle, our SWAT Team, and the negotiators who helped bring the situation to a safe and peaceful end,” the TTPD said. “As it turns out, a refrigerator and a sofa might slow things down a bit, but they aren’t really much of a long-term plan.”
