Volkswagen’s financial struggles are now affecting one of its most important future vehicles, as the German automaker has temporarily suspended development of the all-electric Golf while trying to bring its mounting costs under control.

The upcoming ID.Golf was supposed to carry one of Volkswagen’s most recognizable nameplates into the electric era. Instead, the project has become another casualty of the company’s ongoing restructuring efforts.

According to Reuters, Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer informed employees of the decision in an internal memo. He acknowledged the Golf’s importance to both the company and its Wolfsburg headquarters before delivering a particularly blunt explanation.

“We simply can’t afford this work right now,” Schäfer reportedly wrote. It’s an unusually candid admission from Europe’s largest automaker, especially considering how important the electric Golf is expected to be to its future lineup.

Volkswagen’s Financial Problems Are Getting Worse

The decision follows Volkswagen Group’s largest quarterly loss in over a decade, as the company pushes ahead with aggressive cost-cutting measures. Its restructuring plans include substantial job reductions and the possibility of closing several German factories.

Even Wolfsburg, the company’s historic manufacturing hub, is struggling to meet its financial targets. According to the internal memo cited by Reuters, the plant is approximately €300 million short of its cost-reduction goal.

Volkswagen has also acknowledged that its electric vehicles are less profitable than comparable combustion-powered models. That makes it challenging to invest in expensive new EV technology while the company is trying to improve its margins.

What Happens To The Electric Golf?

The ID.Golf is intended to become a major part of Volkswagen’s next generation of electric vehicles. It is among the first models planned to use the group’s Scalable Systems Platform, or SSP, which promises a more advanced electrical and software architecture.

However, the platform has already encountered delays, complicating the electric Golf’s development timeline, and this latest complication introduces more uncertainty about when the car might reach production.

Volkswagen’s works council insists the temporary freeze won’t delay the vehicle’s eventual launch, saying the lost development time can be recovered. However, with no confirmed date for work to resume, it’s unclear whether that timeline can be maintained.

The Golf Name Isn’t Going Anywhere

Volkswagen’s existing Golf will continue to serve customers who prefer combustion-powered hatchbacks, and the electric ID.3 provides an alternative while the company works through its financial difficulties.

Importantly, Volkswagen has not announced that the ID.Golf has been canceled. The company describes the move as a temporary pause until it can accommodate the necessary investment.

Still, suspending work on a vehicle carrying such an important nameplate shows how seriously Volkswagen is taking its financial problems.
