Under the Spanish sun in Barcelona, Volkswagen rolled out five decades of hot hatch royalty and one outrageous surprise.

The setting was simple, but the story was anything but.

This was a celebration of the Volkswagen Golf GTI, from its 1975 origins to a one-off concept born in the virtual world and unleashed on a real race circuit.

The One That Started It All

It all began with the Mk1. Launched in 1975, the original GTI was never meant to be a global icon. The plan was modest. Build 5,000 units and see what happens. Instead, it blew past expectations, exceeding its target by more than 450,000 cars.

Its tartan cloth seats, inspired by designer Gunhild Liljequist’s trip to London and the punk culture she encountered there, became a signature touch. Slide into one today and you still catch that old school scent of heritage. The golf ball gear knob, a playful nod to the car’s name, remains one of the most charming details in performance car history.

The Evolution

From there, the evolution came quickly. The Mk2 sharpened the formula with power steering, a reworked five speed gearbox, and eventually a 16-valve engine that pushed top speed to around 130 mph. The Mk3 and Mk4 refined the concept further, blending performance with everyday usability.

By the time the Mk5 arrived at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003, enthusiasts hailed it as a return to form. The GTI once again felt raw and focused, yet livable.

The Mk6 benefited from careful development, including input from racing driver Hans Joachim Stuck, who helped fine tune the electronic differential system. That attention to detail delivered sharper handling and an impressive power to weight balance.

The Mk7 then raised the bar as the most powerful GTI yet, becoming the first to surpass 150 mph. The Mk8 followed with a modern twist, moving to a four door only format and introducing a minimalist interior where even the traditional gear shifter disappeared.

Gran Turismo Dream Meets Reality

Then came the star of the show.

A machine that jumped from console to circuit. The GTI Roadster concept was originally created for the video game Gran Turismo. Now it stood in the flesh, painted in dark moss green, roofless and unapologetically wild.

Massive 20-inch wheels filled its arches. A towering rear wing and carbon fiber diffuser dominated the back. Butterfly doors swung open to reveal a cockpit fitted with a five-point harness and a steering wheel that looked ready for Le Mans.

Everything about it screamed bespoke. Custom chassis. Custom headlights. Straight piped exhaust. Even the controls were unconventional, with labeled buttons for start, park, reverse, neutral, and drive. Firing it up required a firm press of the brake and a reach under the dash.

The result was explosive. The sound was raw, metallic, and intoxicating.

As if that was not enough, Volkswagen also showcased a truly unhinged experiment. A mid-engine Golf packing a W12 from a Bentley Continental GT. The result was 650 horsepower in a widened, reinforced body.

It borrowed brakes from an Audi RS4 and chassis elements from a Lamborghini Gallardo, both brands within the Volkswagen Group empire. The transformation turned the once practical hatch into a two-seat monster with aggressive intakes and a carbon fiber roof.

The Roadster Unleashed on Track

But the climax belonged to the Roadster. Strapped in and rolling onto the track, visibility was tight and the seating position uncompromising. Select neutral. Then drive. Squeeze the throttle. The straight piped six cylinder roared to life, delivering more than 500 horsepower in a featherweight package.

Acceleration was violent. The soundtrack was unforgettable. By the end of the run, windblown hair and tears told the story better than any spec sheet could.

From a 110-horsepower rebel in 1975 to a video game fantasy made real, the GTI legacy continues to prove that practicality and passion can coexist. In Barcelona, that legacy felt louder than ever.

In the official information that’s available from Volkswagen and reliable automotive pricing sites, there is no published retail price specifically for the one-of-one GTI Roadster concept you see in the video. That car is a unique build and not a production item listed with a MSRP or series pricing. It is essentially a bespoke show/track piece and VW has not released an official price tag for it.
