Virginia Man Steals Toyota After Violent Home Break-In, Homeowner Dies of Injuries, Police Say

A Virginia man already facing three felony charges could soon face enhanced charges after the 64-year-old he is accused of severely injuring died days after the attack. The Henry County Sheriff’s Office says Frederick Murray died September 19 from injuries he sustained during an assault at his home five days earlier.

Deputies initially responded to Murray’s residence on Brook Court at approximately 5:45 a.m. on September 14 after receiving a report of an assault. They found Murray inside, suffering from severe injuries, and discovered evidence indicating someone had forced their way into the home.

Murray received treatment at the scene before being airlifted to an area hospital, where he remained under medical care. Investigators also determined that his Toyota Camry had been stolen from the residence.

The investigation eventually led deputies to 43-year-old Robert Glenn Wagoner Jr., who was located at a family member’s home in Henry County and taken into custody. Wagoner was initially charged with breaking and entering in the nighttime with intent to commit assault and battery, aggravated malicious wounding and grand larceny of a motor vehicle.

Investigators didn’t have to find Murray’s missing Camry entirely on their own. The sheriff’s office says a concerned citizen contacted law enforcement after discovering the stolen vehicle on property in neighboring Patrick County.

Patrick County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded and confirmed that the vehicle was the same Toyota Camry stolen from Murray’s residence. The Henry County Sheriff’s Office did not provide additional information about exactly where the vehicle was found or how it came to be on the property.

As the investigation continued, detectives developed information identifying Wagoner as a suspect in both the assault and vehicle theft. Investigators say they also recovered evidence related to the case when Wagoner was located, although the sheriff’s office has not described what that evidence was.

Prosecutor Plans More Charges

Murray remained hospitalized following the September 14 assault before dying from his injuries on September 19, according to the sheriff’s office. His death has now changed the direction of the criminal case against Wagoner.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office says it has been in contact with the Henry County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, which directed that enhanced charges be sought against Wagoner following Murray’s death. Authorities have not yet identified what those enhanced charges will be, and the investigation remains active.

Wagoner’s existing charges therefore remain the three initially announced by investigators while authorities determine what comes next. The sheriff’s office says additional information concerning the enhanced charges will be released when appropriate.

Custody Records Show Some Information

Available VINELink custody information lists Wagoner as being booked into the Henry County Jail at approximately 6:38 p.m. on September 14. His custody status was updated later that night and lists him as remaining in custody at the facility.

That information is consistent with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office’s latest update, which says Wagoner remains incarcerated at the Henry County Adult Detention Center without bond. The available records do not provide additional information about the enhanced charges prosecutors intend to pursue.

Wagoner’s current charges remain accusations rather than convictions, and authorities have not announced a final charging decision following Murray’s death. Until that happens, describing the case as murder or assigning another specific homicide charge would go beyond what the sheriff’s office and Commonwealth’s Attorney have publicly established.

Another Violent Case Combined Severe Injuries With a Stolen Vehicle

Another Guessing Headlights case combined accusations of serious violence with the theft of a vehicle, although under very different circumstances. In North Carolina, authorities accused a woman of stealing a U-Haul truck and intentionally running over a man with it during a December 2025 incident.

Deputies said the victim suffered severe injuries requiring emergency treatment and an airlift to another hospital, while the suspect wasn’t arrested until June 2026. She was ultimately charged with attempted first-degree murder and vehicle larceny and was ordered held without bond.

The circumstances surrounding Murray’s death are substantially different, particularly because Henry County prosecutors have not announced what enhanced charge they intend to pursue against Wagoner. Both investigations, however, involve accusations of serious violence alongside a stolen vehicle and victims whose injuries became a central part of the resulting criminal cases.
