A dog in Killarney, Ireland decided it was tired of waiting for its owner. They had left it in a parked car on a busy city street. So it climbed onto the steering wheel and leaned on the horn. And it kept right on honking.

There were two dogs in the car, and both were shaggy doodles. One of them stayed perfectly calm, while the other one clearly didn’t. The impatient one kept climbing at the wheel and hitting the horn, honking like it had a bit of human in it.

The neighbors got a rude awakening out of it, though. The honking carried down the street while one very determined dog laid into the horn over and over in an attempt apparently to get the owner to return. Video of the moment was shared online by CBS Evening News and others, so these dogs’ misbehavior had a chance to touch the entire internet.

Anyone who’s left a dog waiting in the car probably knows the look the dog couldn’t help but showing off. Dogs don’t love being left behind, as you’re probably well aware, and this one found a way to say so. It knew exactly how to get everyone’s attention, though.

Can a Dog Really Honk a Horn on Purpose?

Obviously, dogs don’t actually know what a car horn is. What they’re good at, however, is learning what gets a reaction. If leaning on the wheel makes a loud noise that brings their person running, a dog can learn to try it again. This one clearly figured that out and started executing its plan.

Doodles are also smart, social dogs that hate being apart from their people. So if a doodle is stuck alone in a car, it’s the kind of dog that’ll definitely start pawing at everything in reach. Honking the horn just happened to be the thing that actually worked in this situation.

Why You Shouldn’t Leave Your Dog in a Hot Car

The video is funny, but there’s a point to it, too.. A parked car can heat up fast, even on a mild day, and even with the windows cracked. Dogs can’t cool themselves down the way people do. That’s why you need to make sure they’re safe when they’re left alone.

If you can leave your dog at home on a warm day, that’s what you should do. If you do bring them along, keep the trips short and don’t leave them alone in the car. This dog got lucky and only ended up annoying the neighbors. Not every dog left in a hot car is so lucky.
