Multiple suspects have been arrested following a home invasion in Chandler, Arizona, which left a disabled woman with gunshot wounds and her elderly father injured. As per the police, Uber records helped track the individuals, who were then located heading to Mexico.
As reported by AZFamily, citing court documents, the incident occurred on Saturday, June 6. At around 6 a.m., police officers responded to a residence near Arizona Avenue and Elliot Road following reports of a burglary.
Upon arrival, officers learned that at least two individuals had forcefully entered the residence. Allegedly, an elderly man had been struck in the head with a gun after the suspects entered through his bedroom door.
Then, the elderly man’s daughter, who reportedly had special needs due to a traumatic brain injury, had suffered two gunshot wounds to her arm. More bullets were allegedly fired at her, but missed. Both victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment and are expected to survive.
Investigation
Police gained access to surveillance video. Upon review, officers observed three suspects allegedly breaking into the aforementioned home.
Video footage from inside the house also corroborated what the elderly man described. Additionally, one of the suspects was shown allegedly shooting at a window while they were trying to escape.
Furthermore, police said that the suspects told the elderly man to give them his vehicle keys. Then, after exiting the house, they are accused of taking the man’s Mercedes sedan and fleeing the scene.
Uber Incident
During the investigation, police came across a separate incident involving an Uber driver. According to him, five tattooed men had attempted to enter his vehicle without consent. This occurred around 20 minutes before the home invasion.
According to the driver, as detailed in court documents, he had told the group that he couldn’t fit them all inside his vehicle. As a result, one of the men allegedly used a firearm to strike him in the head.
The driver was then held at gunpoint, police said, and had some of his personal items stolen. While he was hospitalized, agents used Uber records to track down the one who had requested the drive. Police eventually responded to a Chandler home, and the Uber account’s holder identified 18-year-old Jesus Nunez as one of the suspects involved.
Tracked Down
Police officers responded to a Phoenix home, which was one of the requested drop-offs connected to the Uber account. Blocks away, officers found the elderly man’s Mercedes, damaged and missing its license plate.
Through the use of cell phone records, police officers tracked down Nunez. As per the police, he was traveling toward the Arizona-Mexico border.
On Sunday, June 7, police found him in a vehicle, and he was placed under arrest. Three adults and an underage suspect were also arrested.
Arrested and Charged
Jesus Nunez is charged with armed robbery, theft of means of transportation, burglary, aggravated assault, and aggravated robbery. He is currently being held on a $250,000 bond.
The other three adults found in the vehicle face charges of hindering the investigation. The underage suspect, meanwhile, is in custody in connection with the Chandler home invasion incident.
Currently, authorities are investigating the incident. The other suspects involved are still at large.
