A night that reportedly started with a group of young men hanging out together in an open field ended in tragedy, with two people dead and a 24-year-old facing serious felony charges.

Two e-motorcycle riders, both 20 years old, lost their lives Monday night after a pickup truck struck them while they were stopped at a stop sign in Sacramento County. The California Highway Patrol confirmed the crash happened around 9:15 p.m. near Eagles Nest Road and Woodring Drive, located just south of the Mather Golf Course. Neither rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

What makes this crash especially haunting is that the victims were not moving when they were hit. They were fully stopped, obeying traffic signs, when a Nissan Titan pickup truck came barreling toward them at what witnesses described as an extremely high rate of speed. The driver lost control, and both riders were run over. There was nothing they could have done to avoid it.

CHP public information officer Angie Monroe described the moment plainly: the truck was traveling so fast it lost control entirely before striking the two young men. Two additional people were also taken to the hospital, one with major injuries and one with moderate injuries, though it remains unclear whether they were passengers in the truck or occupants of an unrelated vehicle that was clipped as the truck spun out.

The Driver Fled on Foot, But Did Not Get Far

After the crash, two male subjects ran from the scene and disappeared into nearby fields. One was quickly detained. The second, identified as 24-year-old Jihvon Thompson of Sacramento, was later tracked down at his home and placed under arrest.

Thompson now faces a serious list of charges: two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter, two counts of felony DUI causing great bodily injury or death, one count of felony hit and run, and an additional DUI count. He is currently being held in Sacramento County Main Jail with bail set at $550,000 and is due back in court on Thursday.

Everyone at the Scene May Have Known Each Other

One of the more troubling details that emerged from the investigation is that the victims and the people in the truck were apparently not strangers. Monroe told reporters that multiple witnesses said the groups of young men had been spending time together earlier that evening, possibly drinking together in nearby dirt fields before the crash occurred.

“We do have word from witnesses that all of these groups of young men were hanging out, possibly drinking together in the dirt fields a little further down, and that they’re all known to one another,” Monroe said, adding that multiple witnesses reported the truck was packed with people at the time of the crash. Alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor.

What This Tragedy Can Teach Us

Crashes like this one carry lessons that are as simple as they are devastating. Driving under the influence does not just put the driver at risk. It puts everyone nearby in danger, including people doing everything right, people who are stopped, following the rules, and waiting their turn at an intersection.

The absence of helmets on the two riders adds another painful dimension. While helmets would not have changed the outcome of a direct impact from a truck moving at extreme speed, helmet use remains one of the most effective protections available to motorcycle and e-motorcycle riders in less severe incidents. Many states, including California, require helmets for all motorcycle riders, and the reminder to wear one is never a bad one.

Monroe summed it up with the kind of straightforward grief that comes from responding to scenes like this one too many times. “It’s disheartening to know that people feel the need to drive so recklessly when it’s so senseless,” she said. “So many lives are changed.”

Road Closed for Hours Following the Crash

The severity of the scene prompted an extended road closure in the area that lasted well into the early morning hours. Roads did not reopen until after 4 a.m. Tuesday, as investigators worked through the night to piece together exactly what happened.

The identities of the two riders who were killed have not yet been released. Their families are in the thoughts of the Sacramento community as the investigation continues and the case moves through the court system.
