A genuine BMW Z8 is the sort of modern classic that requires a seriously healthy budget, yet somebody found a considerably cheaper route to roughly the same visual effect. Underneath this black roadster is a 2003 BMW Z4 2.5i that has been extensively restyled to resemble its far more valuable sibling.
The transformation goes well beyond a few badges and a different set of wheels. Its bodywork, exterior trim, paint, and interior were all altered under previous ownership, creating a convincing interpretation of the Z8 without attempting to hide the Z4 underneath.
The unusual BMW is currently being offered at no reserve on Bring a Trailer, where the listing reveals the history behind its transformation. That history also includes an early accident and a salvage title, so this isn’t simply a clean Z4 that someone decided to cut apart for fun.
What emerged is a curious second life for an early E85 roadster. It doesn’t have the performance or collectability of the car it imitates, although it could offer some of the visual drama for a fraction of the money.
This Z4 Started Life In Titanium Silver
BMW originally finished the car in Titanium Silver Metallic, and its Carfax report shows a much less glamorous chapter early in its life. The Z4 sustained front, side, and rear impact damage before receiving a salvage title or certificate in March 2005.
At some point afterward, the roadster received its Z8-inspired makeover and was repainted black. The conversion incorporates Z8-style bodywork and trim along with projector-style headlights, fog lights, polished dual exhaust outlets, and BMW Style 59 alloy wheels measuring 18 inches.
The proportions help the conversion considerably because the Z4 already provides the long-hood, short-deck shape expected from a BMW roadster. It isn’t going to fool a dedicated Z8 enthusiast up close, yet the finished product looks surprisingly cohesive for a car wearing the identity of an entirely different BMW.
The Interior Got The Z8 Treatment Too
Opening the doors reveals that the transformation didn’t stop with the exterior. The power-adjustable bucket seats have been retrimmed in custom red and black leather, with matching material applied to portions of the dashboard and door panels.
Z8-embroidered floor mats continue the theme, while high-gloss silver dashboard trim adds some contrast. That said, the cabin retains familiar Z4 equipment, including a BMW Business CD stereo and air conditioning.
The odometer currently displays 22,000 miles, although Bring a Trailer describes that figure as the mileage shown following the selling dealer’s acquisition in 2026. Buyers also get a black convertible soft top and top boot, though the seller notes that the roof’s power release works, while raising and lowering must be performed manually.
Don’t Expect Z8 Performance
The resemblance ends rather decisively once you look under the hood. A real Z8 used a 4.9-liter V8 related to the engine found in the contemporary E39 M5, whereas this Z4 retains its naturally aspirated 2.5-liter M54B25 inline-six.
BMW rated that engine at 184 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque when new. Power reaches the rear wheels through a five-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, so nobody is likely to mistake this for the real thing after a hard launch.
That doesn’t necessarily make it a bad cruiser, as the combination of an inline-six, rear-wheel drive, compact roadster proportions, and an open roof still gives this unusual creation plenty of ingredients for an enjoyable weekend car.
Champagne On A Beer Budget
This Z4’s oddball nature is precisely what makes the car interesting. Rather than attempting to restore a damaged Z4 to its original appearance, somebody turned it into a distinctive Z8 tribute that stands apart from the thousands of standard E85 roadsters BMW produced.
Bring a Trailer’s no-reserve auction is scheduled to end September 8. Whatever it ultimately sells for, the new owner will be getting something difficult to categorize: not quite a Z4 anymore, certainly not a Z8, and arguably much more interesting than another ordinary used BMW roadster.
