EV batteries are often a source of anxiety for first-time buyers, particularly when it comes to longevity and replacement costs. However, one 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV has traveled enough miles to challenge some common assumptions about electric car durability.

With an astonishing 471,616 miles on its odometer, this well-traveled Bolt is approaching the half-million-mile milestone. Getting there, however, required some attention to its aging battery pack.

The car recently appeared on the Out of Spec Renew YouTube channel, where they tackled a battery replacement to get it back on the road. Despite its extraordinary mileage, the Bolt has avoided major drivetrain failures.

Like any car nearing half a million miles, this Bolt has seen its fair share of repairs. Still, considering it’s been driven far beyond the mileage most owners will ever accumulate, this affordable electric hatchback is holding up surprisingly well.

Over 330,000 Miles On One Battery

The Bolt’s original battery was replaced under Chevrolet’s widespread battery recall at approximately 138,000 miles. That replacement pack went on to cover roughly 333,000 miles before developing serious problems.

Diagnostic testing revealed significant voltage imbalances between cells, preventing the car from starting or shifting into drive. Once the battery was removed, the technician also discovered swelling on several cell modules.

Rather than attempt individual module repairs, the shop installed another battery sourced from a 2017 Bolt. The donor car had received that battery as a warranty replacement in 2023, and the pack was estimated to have covered just 10,000–15,000 miles.

Surprisingly Good Condition For The Mileage

The Bolt hasn’t escaped maintenance entirely, having undergone suspension repairs and replacements of wheel bearings and a couple of steering racks over its lifetime.

However, the electric drive motor is original and was even exceptionally quiet during the post-repair test drive. The car also showed relatively modest underbody corrosion despite spending its life in Vermont.

There are still some issues to address, including a leaking axle seal and overdue reduction-gear oil service. Nevertheless, the technician described its overall condition as surprisingly good.

A Battery Replacement That Didn’t Break The Bank

The replacement battery cost approximately $1,800 delivered, thanks to a favorable deal from the supplier, and the shop performed the repair free of charge to help the owner.

For a typical customer, the technician estimated a replacement pack would cost around $2,500–$3,000, plus roughly $800 in labor at his shop’s rates.

After installation and software programming, the Bolt successfully returned to the road, and a subsequent diagnostic scan showed no fault codes.

Whether it reaches 500,000 miles remains to be seen, but with its replacement battery installed and the original drive motor still working, this Chevy Bolt isn’t finished yet.
