If you come across construction work on the road, the best thing to do is simply obey the traffic rules around it and not do anything stupid. Such as trying to drive around it. Unfortunately, one SUV driver in some dashcam footage doesn’t appear to have gotten that memo.

Dashcam footage has emerged on the r/dashcams subreddit, uploaded by Reddit user zanibul014, showing exactly that. In it, we can see a driver going off-roading to try to pass an Austin construction zone, but getting it very wrong with pretty major consequences.

The footage shows the Toyota SUV driver cutting around the other side of the roadworks in an effort to bypass them and other traffic. Yet all they ended up doing was go through a lot of dirt and gravel, and slow themselves down before they had to get back onto the actual road surface.

Sadly for them, and hilariously for us viewing, when they did get back onto the road, the car was launched up into the air and came to land on the divider between the road and construction work. As expected, Reddit users lapped up the footage in the comments section.

How the SUV Driver Got Things Badly Wrong

The irate driver looked to want to pass the car in front of it as they drove through the construction zone in Austin, Texas. The car we are riding in was likely just obeying the speed limits, as any good citizen would. But this driver wasn’t interested in that, so he ducked to his left and tried to go off-road to get past.

That really didn’t go to plan. Instead of going quicker, the SUV ended up being slowed down by the dirt and gravel it had to drive through. We can see from the footage that the car we are riding on board with manages to pull ahead of it. The SUV driver probably realized their mistake, but failed to notice a rather large hump as the gravel ran out and reverted back to tarmac.

We can see the SUV bounce up on the hump and get some air before coming back down hard on the road and bouncing again. This time, it landed on the divider between the construction zone and the road itself. It rides along the top of the divider, clearly causing damage, before it comes off and comes to a rest alongside it, visibly sitting lower than it was before its adventure. If the driver didn’t think that was embarrassing, then we don’t know what would give him that impression.

Reddit Users Loved Watching the SUV Driver Fail

If the caption over the video wasn’t enough, Reddit users very clearly shared a similar viewpoint about the driver’s exploits. “Some lovely FAFO,” said the top comment on the video. “Straightenin’ the curves,” said another one jokingly, quite bemused by the whole affair. “But this is a rare one. It got categorically worse with every second,” said another user, which really does sum up the situation beautifully.

“It’s almost like the off-road dude refused to lose the race he started. [Expletive] refused to hit the brakes lol,” said another Reddit user in reply to the above comment. “I didn’t have a great day today, but this video cheered me up nicely,” said another one. Quite clearly, people got quite a kick out of the clip, and it is easy to see why. That SUV driver will likely think twice before doing something like that again.
