Street racing meetups don’t exactly have the best track record when it comes to ending peacefully. In Colorado Springs, one such gathering ended with a driver fleeing police at more than 80 mph, launching a vehicle airborne, and sending a passenger to the hospital.
According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, the incident happened around 2 am on June 29 near the intersection of Galley Road and North Academy Boulevard.
Police say an officer was conducting a proactive patrol in the 300 block of North Academy Boulevard when he spotted multiple vehicles gathered in the parking lot of a closed business. Apparently, this wasn’t the first time officers had dealt with issues at the location, as authorities noted that the business had experienced ongoing problems with overnight street racing gatherings and already had an active trespass notice on file.
Things went downhill when the officer attempted to make contact with the people associated with the vehicles.
The Driver Tried To Escape

According to the official police report, one of the vehicles suddenly sped out of the parking lot recklessly and pulled onto North Academy Boulevard.
The officer caught up to the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but police say the driver had other plans. Instead of pulling over, the vehicle accelerated to speeds exceeding 80 mph in a posted 45 mph zone.
Due to the danger the pursuit posed to other drivers, the officer ultimately discontinued the attempted stop near Portal Drive and North Academy Boulevard. Unfortunately for the suspect, the high-speed getaway didn’t last very long.
Police say the vehicle continued northbound before attempting to make a right turn onto eastbound Galley Road. The driver failed to negotiate the turn, crossed all lanes of traffic, struck a curb, and then went airborne.
The vehicle then slammed into a raised concrete parking lot at a nearby business before finally coming to rest.
Passenger Had to Be Extricated From the Wreck
The driver was identified as 22-year-old Colby Hackney, who suffered minor injuries and was quickly detained by officers at the scene.
Unfortunately, a passenger was trapped inside the wrecked vehicle and had to be extricated by crews with the Colorado Springs Fire Department. After being freed, the passenger was transported to a hospital with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.
Hackney was arrested and booked on charges including vehicular eluding resulting in injury, assault, DUI, reckless driving, and trespassing.
All lanes of Galley Road at North Academy Boulevard were eventually reopened after crews cleared the scene. As always, all suspects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
