Chaos erupted at a sideshow in Hayward, California, as a driver in a blue Chevy Camaro with no plates, a vehicle allegedly stolen, was caught on video performing donuts. This led to multiple people being struck, with the driver eventually hitting a parked semi-truck.
According to ABC 7 News, the incident occurred at around 2 a.m. on Saturday, April 18. A clip shared by the outlet shows the Camaro doing donuts near Clawiter and Depot Roads. As per KTVU, there were at least 60 cars present during the event, which was illegal.
The first maneuver shows the vehicle driving into the curb, hitting multiple onlookers attending the sideshow, all of whom appear to stand up immediately after. The clip cuts to the same Camaro doing a donut at the other side of the street, this time hitting the curb and losing several pieces, narrowly missing some more onlookers.
Immediately after, the Camaro is shown crashing headfirst into a parked semi-truck. People present at the sideshow, thrilled by the quick succession of events, approached the vehicle while jumping excitedly. Some are shown jumping on top of the blue Camaro, all while things are hurled at it.
Police Investigation, Vehicle Stolen
Eventually, Hayward Police Department officers responded to the scene, with the clip showing two officers assessing the scene on a then-empty street with the abandoned Camaro. According to them, the blue vehicle was reported stolen out of San Jose, which is approximately a 37-minute drive away.
Meanwhile, the individual behind the wheel and possibly other occupants fled the scene before the police arrived. Additionally, a second black vehicle was reported to have also hit several bystanders during the sideshow, but further details are sparse.
Fortunately, it appears that no one was seriously injured, as no reported hospitalizations were made public.
Reactions to the Sideshow Mayhem
As per KTVU, the semi-truck driver, who was also not injured, appeared distraught by the street chaos. Recorded by one of the sideshow attendees, the confused man asked, “Why? Why are you guys tearing up cars? Why?”
KRON4, meanwhile, spoke to Hayward Mayor Mark Salinas, who called sideshows life-threatening and violent. Furthermore, he advised against attending these events, as a 2024 law prohibits citizens from becoming spectators.
“If you’re a bystander at a sideshow you will be arrested and charged equally to being a participant of the sideshow,” Mayor Salinas told the outlet.
For the time being, the Hayward Police Department has yet to announce any arrests, as the suspect, possibly suspects, remain at large.
