A late-night police pursuit on Interstate 10 ended with an arrest after authorities say a Louisiana man fled deputies at speeds exceeding 120 mph before losing control of his vehicle in Jackson County. What’s odd about this case is that the suspect attempted to discard items through the vehicle’s sunroof during the chase, hitting an officer’s car.
According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the chase began shortly after midnight on June 6 when a deputy observed a vehicle committing a traffic violation near Caryville along Interstate 10. Deputies said the officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop around 12:00 am, but the driver allegedly refused to pull over, choosing to accelerate, prompting a high-speed pursuit down the interstate.
During the chase, officials said the driver reached speeds of more than 120 mph while attempting to evade law enforcement. The pursuit stretched across county lines and involved multiple agencies working together to safely bring the incident to an end.
As the pursuit intensified, the Florida Highway Patrol joined and assumed primary responsibility for the chase. Authorities continued tracking the suspect vehicle eastbound into neighboring Jackson County.
The Chase Hit Triple Digits Fast
Officials did not immediately identify what items were allegedly thrown or whether the patrol unit sustained damage. However, there were no injuries to deputies or motorists reported during the incident.
The pursuit eventually reached a turning point when deputies with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office were able to successfully set out spike strips on I-10. Shortly after the tires were punctured, the suspect lost control of the vehicle, ending the chase and letting law enforcement take him into custody.
Authorities identified the suspect as 41-year-old Darrell Edward Terrio of Louisiana. Following his arrest, Terrio was transported to the Jackson County Jail, where officials said he is currently awaiting transfer back to Washington County.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said local warrants have been filed charging Terrio with felony fleeing and eluding at high speed, as well as driving while license suspended or revoked.
What Are the Charges?
At this time, authorities have not released additional details regarding the original traffic violation that led deputies to attempt the stop. Officials also have not said whether additional charges could be filed in connection with the alleged items thrown from the vehicle during the pursuit.
In a statement following the arrest, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office thanked assisting agencies for helping safely conclude the incident. High-speed pursuits on major interstates can present serious dangers to officers and other drivers, particularly when speeds exceed 100 mph.
The sheriff’s office specifically credited the Florida Highway Patrol and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office for their role in ending the pursuit and helping bring the suspect into custody.
Reactions To Suspect Hitting Sheriff’s Patrol Unit With Discarded Items
A few people jumped into the comments section of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office’s Post about the situation, with many condemning the man’s actions. Two people wrote very similar comments about the incident, writing, “Fool around and find out,” and “Fafo.”
Others were more concerned about what it was that he could have possibly thrown from the sunroof. Two different commenters wrote, “Did they find what he threw out?” and “What was he throwing out the sunroof.”
Fortunately, officials confirmed the chase ended without injuries despite the extreme speeds involved. Terrio remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. Additional information regarding court proceedings or bond details was not immediately available.
