Adam walked into a pet store with his daughter looking for something entirely different. Buying a bird — particularly one carrying an $800 price tag — was not part of the plan.
He had recently put his available money into supplies for his business, leaving the bird outside what he could comfortably spend. Adam told his daughter they couldn’t get him and managed to get her out of the store.
Mango had made that considerably harder by appearing determined to get their attention. Adam recalled the bird coming toward them, reaching as though he wanted his finger and licking the glass while staring at the pair.
The decision appeared settled until they reached the car. Adam said his daughter turned around in tears and told him, “Daddy, he’s too special.” He went back inside.
Back For Mango

Speaking with GeoBeats Animals, Adam said the connection with Mango seemed immediate.
That first encounter at the glass was only the beginning. Mango has since developed a habit Adam calls the “hand hammock,” settling into his hand while Adam pets him. Adam said the bird would happily remain there for hours if allowed.
Mango is not entirely passive about the arrangement. Adam joked that when the petting fails to meet expectations, Mango will “beak” him — nibbling at him until he gets the message.
The bird has also become woven into the rhythm of the household. Adam said Mango wakes him when the sun comes up and seems to enforce a 9 p.m. bedtime, screaming if Adam remains awake past it.
Days Between

For Adam, though, Mango’s importance extends well beyond an entertaining routine.
He described himself as a single dad whose daughter stays with him from Friday through Monday before returning to school. The days in between can become lonely.
Mango, he said, fills that space.
When Adam is sad, the bird leans into him. The two spend most of their waking hours together, and Adam described Mango as his “beating heart outside of my body.”
What began as the purchase Adam believed he could not afford has become something he says makes his everyday life considerably less stressful.
“This is just how he acts all the time,” Adam said. “He just literally loves me.”
