A man in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, was convicted of poaching more than a dozen alligators back in May. While serving his probation sentence, he found himself in hot water again, as he was arrested for a DUI.
As reported by The Daytona Beach News-Journal, citing a New Smyrna Beach Police Department (NSBPD) arrest report, the incident occurred on June 14. At 6:43 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of State Road 44 and Ocean Gate Boulevard.
Upon arrival, NSBPD officers encountered a driver sleeping while behind the wheel. The individual, later identified as 21-year-old Jacob William Latreille, had his car in drive and his foot on the brake, police said.
A sergeant eventually put the car in park to avoid an accident, the report added. Then, the engine was shut off, and officers managed to wake Latreille up.
DUI Stop
Once the 21-year-old regained consciousness, he was asked for his driver’s license. Instead of doing that, he is accused of handing over a stick of deodorant to the sergeant who had just shut off his car.
Officers then noted other signs of impairment. This included, as per the report, glossy eyes, slurred speech, and a noticeable smell of alcohol.
According to the NSBPD, when asked why he was sleeping behind the wheel, Latreille said that he was “just chilling,” insisting that he was fine. Despite this, he allegedly refused to take part in field sobriety tests or take part in a breathalyzer test. Therefore, he was placed under arrest.
Alligator Poaching
Latrielle is no stranger to Florida justice, as he was serving probation at the time of his arrest. Back in September 2025, he was accused of killing 13 alligators while hunting at Brevard County’s St. Johns River.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission placed him under arrest on September 22, 2025. He was then charged with 13 counts of alligator poaching.
Initially, he pleaded not guilty to all charges in a Brevard County court. However, he eventually changed his plea to no contest.
Probation Violation
As a result, Latrielle was sentenced to three years’ probation in May 2026. Additionally, he had his hunting and fishing privileges suspended.
However, following his June arrest, he now remains at the Volusia County Jail with no bond. This is due to a violation of probation charge.
Jacob William Latreille is also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, refusal to submit to DUI testing, and driving with a suspended or revoked license. He is also required to pay $750 in fines and $533 in court costs.
