Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood almost turned into a disaster zone Saturday morning after an SUV tore down the sidewalk and set off a wild pileup with several parked cars. Local news says it happened around 8 a.m. on Hubert Street, just east of Greenwich Street, and honestly, the aftermath looked more like a scene ripped out of an action movie than anything you would expect on a quiet weekend morning.
A Jeep SUV barreled through, smashing everything in its way before slamming into a parked car. The crash jolted one vehicle right onto the roof of another, leaving residents and folks passing by just standing there, stunned. Amazingly, no one got hurt. Not the driver, not the pedestrians, nobody.
People heard a massive crash and rushed out to find the mess. Security cameras and photos from nearby buildings captured the whole thing. You could see how close pedestrians came to being hit.
Witnesses Describe a Narrow Escape
One guy told Tribeca Citizen he and his son had just been getting ready to head to a coffee shop. They thought they were listening to construction, but outside, an SUV had just flown down the sidewalk. Others pointed out that the street is busy with families, dog walkers and regular folks enjoying their Saturday mornings.

A doorman said he had just gone inside after his shift. He realized that if he had stayed outside for a couple more seconds, he would have been right in the SUV’s path.
Jamie Hort’s Subaru got wrecked, too. He said his family had planned to head to the beach, but instead walked outside to see their car sitting on top of another one. His son, Sam, caught the whole thing and saw the driver climb out and claim he had simply lost control.
Police Believe a Medical Emergency May Be To Blame
Police think the crash was probably caused by some kind of medical episode. They did not arrest the driver, and an officer told Tribeca Trib investigators believed the motorist suffered a medical issue before losing control.
The driver refused medical help after the crash. Airbags deployed, and the passenger also managed to get out of the SUV.
It is still unclear what caused the vehicle to leave the road, and officials have not provided any more details about what led up to the crash.
Residents Renew Calls for Safer Streets
Locals mentioned that Hubert Street is a cut through for drivers looking to reach the Holland Tunnel. People have complained for years about speeding and risky driving there, especially outside of busy hours.

One witness said some cars blast through at almost 50 mph just trying to beat the lights. Over and over, the community has called for speed bumps, more traffic cameras and better enforcement.
After this crash, concerns about pedestrian safety flared up again. Residents and online commenters argued that reckless driving is getting worse. Plenty called for new speed bumps, additional cameras and redesigned streets to stop drivers from treating the neighborhood as a shortcut to the tunnel. Some believe stricter penalties are overdue.
Really, the most shocking thing about Saturday’s crash is not the stack of battered cars, but the luck that kept everyone safe. In Tribeca, sidewalks are packed with strollers, dogs and pedestrians. The whole incident served as a reminder of how quickly a normal morning can spiral and how close everyone came to real tragedy.
