Nissan Pathfinder Celebrates 40 Years With A Retro-Inspired Special Edition

The Nissan Pathfinder is turning 40, and the Japanese automaker is celebrating by bringing back a distinctive piece of its 1980s heritage. The 2027 Pathfinder Special Edition introduces burgundy interior trim inspired by the original SUV, alongside exclusive styling details and additional equipment.

First introduced for the 1987 model year, the Pathfinder started life as a rugged, two-door SUV before evolving into today’s three-row family hauler. Four decades and five generations later, Nissan is revisiting its roots without sacrificing modern comfort.

The anniversary model combines black and burgundy upholstery with subtle exterior accents, giving the familiar Pathfinder a nostalgic twist. It also gets several premium features that make it one of the better-equipped versions in the lineup.

Pricing starts at $47,390 for the front-wheel-drive Special Edition, while the all-wheel-drive version costs $49,390, excluding a $1,575 destination charge. The 2027 Pathfinder lineup arrives at dealerships in November.

The biggest nostalgic touch is the two-tone black and burgundy TailorFit upholstery, which pays tribute to the burgundy cloth seats available in the original 1987 Pathfinder. The color scheme extends throughout the cabin, creating a noticeably different atmosphere from the regular models.

Outside, Nissan adds burgundy accents, including distinctive Pathfinder lettering across the tailgate. Black 20-inch alloy wheels complete the Special Edition’s appearance, giving the SUV a slightly sportier look.

Premium Features Come Standard

Beyond the retro-inspired styling, the Special Edition includes a panoramic moonroof, second-row captain’s chairs, rear-door sunshades, and a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system. With captain’s chairs replacing the second-row bench, seating capacity drops from eight to seven.

It also gets a tow hitch as standard, allowing both front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive versions to tow up to 6,000 pounds. That’s a substantial improvement over the 3,500-pound rating of the standard SV and SL models.

Familiar V6 Power Under The Hood

Mechanically, the anniversary model still uses Nissan’s familiar naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6, producing 284 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels or all four, depending on configuration.

Every 2027 Pathfinder also comes with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Nissan Safety Shield 360 driver-assistance technology.

Nissan reached another milestone in September 2026 when it sold its two-millionth Pathfinder. The SUV has also been assembled in Smyrna, Tennessee, since 2004.

The Special Edition doesn’t attempt to recreate the original Pathfinder’s rugged two-door character. Instead, it offers a tasteful nod to the nameplate’s past while retaining the comfort and practicality today’s buyers expect.
