For many Americans, road trips are no longer planned around just the human passengers. Dogs, cats, and other furry companions are increasingly influencing everything from holiday travel plans to the features their owners value in a vehicle.

A new survey commissioned by Subaru reveals just how much influence pets have over their owners’ travel decisions. Apparently, some people would rather spend hours behind the wheel than leave their four-legged friends at home.

According to the research, 73% of respondents said they were more likely to drive instead of fly specifically so they could bring their pets along. Meanwhile, 68% said their animals would influence their holiday travel plans this year.

The survey, conducted by Talker Research among 2,000 American drivers and pet owners, also found that 45% had turned down travel opportunities that couldn’t accommodate their pets. Clearly, bringing the family dog or cat along is becoming an important part of the journey.

Having enough space for pets, passengers, and luggage was the biggest vehicle-related priority, mentioned by 32% of respondents. Another 29% valued good visibility to keep an eye on their animals, while 27% prioritized easy-to-clean seats and cargo areas.

Cargo space for crates, carriers, beds, and other pet accessories was important to 26% of respondents. That figure increased to 35% among hybrid and electric vehicle drivers.

These findings suggest that practical features like spacious interiors, washable surfaces, and flexible cargo areas can make a difference to pet owners. Interestingly, 51% of respondents even said they preferred traveling with their pets over human companions.

Younger Drivers Are Leading The Trend

The survey also revealed noticeable differences between generations when it comes to traveling with animals. Around 75% of Gen Z respondents and 70% of millennials had taken their pets on a road trip during the previous five years.

That compares with 58% of Gen X respondents and just 40% of baby boomers. Younger owners were also more likely to plan their trips around their pets, with 42% of Gen Z and millennials doing so compared with 27% of older respondents.

Beyond choosing road trips over flights, pets are influencing where and how people celebrate the holidays. Some respondents planned to host gatherings instead of traveling, while others expected to shorten trips or skip events their pets couldn’t attend.

Nearly half of respondents said they typically start planning pet-friendly long weekends at least three weeks in advance. For these travelers, finding suitable accommodation and transportation is clearly an important consideration.

Of course, the Subaru-commissioned survey reflects reported preferences rather than actual vehicle purchases. Nevertheless, it suggests that automakers have another audience to consider when designing practical, family-friendly vehicles.
