A mechanic is warning drivers about a common habit that could put an unnecessary risk on your car’s transmission. The mistake is most common when you’re parking, but it’s simple to avoid.

The mechanic shared the warning in a short video on TikTok and explained how drivers can damage their transmission by shifting gears before their vehicle comes to a complete stop.

The video focuses on a common habit: drivers switching from reverse to drive while the vehicle is still moving backward. Although it might seem like a harmless shortcut when backing out of a parking space, the mechanic warns against the practice.

It’s an easy thing to avoid by allowing your vehicle to stop completely before selecting the next gear.

Come to a Complete Stop

@rcjmobilemechanics 🚨 STOP before you shift! Don’t switch between Drive and Reverse while the vehicle is still moving. Doing this repeatedly can seriously damage your automatic transmission and lead to a very expensive repair. According to Hyundai’s 2025 owner’s manual, drivers should always come to a complete stop before shifting into or out of reverse. Doing so while the vehicle is moving can damage the transmission.

The same principle applies when switching between reverse and drive. These gears are designed to move a vehicle in opposite directions, so changing between them while the car is still in motion can place unnecessary strain on the vehicle.

Rather than immediately shifting into drive while backing out of a space, drivers should press the brake pedal and wait until the vehicle has stopped before changing gears.

The extra moment might not seem significant, but following the manufacturer’s instructions can help drivers avoid facing an expensive repair bill.

Transmission Problems Can Become Expensive

An article by AAA Club Alliance explains that transmission problems could cost drivers several thousand dollars to repair. They also identify warning signs such as unusual noises, slipping gears, hesitation, and difficulty shifting.

They note that drivers who notice these symptoms should have their vehicles inspected. AAA also recommends following the maintenance schedule specified in the owner’s manual, as service intervals vary by vehicle.

Many comments under the mechanic’s original post showed just how many people are guilty of this common habit. One commenter said their transmission had failed after making this mistake, adding that they planned on correcting the habit after buying a new car. Another said they just spent $5,000 rebuilding their transmission and also confessed to doing this common habit.

The mechanic’s warning serves as a reminder that small driving habits can matter when it comes to maintaining a vehicle.
