NASCAR driver Natalie Decker’s recent appearance on the Speedway Sessions podcast with Matt Tifft has sparked intense discussion within the racing community after she revealed details about how she met her husband, Derek Lemke.

During the podcast, the 28-year-old driver recounted meeting Lemke at a racetrack when she was 14 years old. At the time, Lemke would have been approximately 18 years old.

The couple married in December 2023 and welcomed their first child in February 2025. But fans are torn after finding out the relationship didn’t start out as wholesome as they thought. In fact, some believe Decker was groomed.

The Initial Meeting

According to Decker’s account on the podcast, the first encounter occurred at Lemke’s home track in Elko. She described noticing him in line ahead of her while checking in for pit passes, particularly his distinctive baby-blue Bauer hockey-brand hat, worn backwards.

Decker recalled telling her father at the time that if Lemke was both a hockey player and race car driver, she would marry him someday.

What has drawn the most scrutiny from fans and observers is what allegedly happened after that initial meeting. According to Decker, Lemke contacted her via Instagram direct message following their encounter at the track.

“He messaged me on Instagram and he was like, ‘Call me when you’re 18,'” Decker stated during the podcast.

This revelation prompted an immediate reaction from podcast co-host Tifft, who questioned whether the situation constituted grooming. “Whoa. Is that grooming? I feel like that’s grooming,” Tifft said during the conversation.

Reconnection Years Later

In response to the word “grooming,” Decker seemingly just laughed it off.

Decker went on to describe how she and Lemke eventually reconnected after she turned 18. She shared details about reaching out to him on Valentine’s Day, sending what she described as a provocative photo and asking about her Valentine’s Day present.

According to Decker, they remained in continuous contact from that point forward.

The podcast clip quickly circulated on social media, generating significant backlash from NASCAR fans and observers. Many expressed concern about the nature of how the relationship allegedly began, with numerous commenters describing the story as disturbing or inappropriate to share publicly.

The reaction was substantial enough that Tifft ultimately deleted the clip from his social media account on X (formerly Twitter), though the full podcast episode reportedly remains available.

Context and Career

Decker has competed in various NASCAR series throughout her career, including the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series (formerly known as the Xfinity Series). She most recently competed at Daytona, where she was involved in a multi-car incident during the race. This was also highlighted in the podcast episode, overshadowed by the conversation about her husband.

Her racing career has been marked by mixed results and some controversy, though she has maintained rides within NASCAR’s developmental series.

The controversy highlights ongoing conversations about appropriate relationships and power dynamics, particularly when significant age gaps exist during formative years. While the couple is now married with a child, the details shared about their initial contact have raised questions within the NASCAR community about the circumstances under which their relationship began.

Neither Decker nor Lemke have issued additional statements addressing the social media reaction to the podcast revelations. The racing community continues to discuss the implications of the story and whether such details should have been shared publicly.
