Road rage can make people do some pretty unbelievable things. Most of us have seen drivers yell, honk their horns, or throw their hands in the air. But this was no ordinary outburst. Police in New York say one confrontation allegedly erupted into chaos, with a woman brandishing what appeared to be a handgun — her young daughter trapped inside the SUV, witnessing the madness firsthand.
According to the Town of Ramapo Police Department, officers were called around 8:30 p.m. Thursday to the area of Hemion Road and Lackawanna Trail in Montebello after receiving reports of a road rage incident involving what witnesses believed was a firearm. After the investigation, the department released details of the arrest, and Monsey Scoop was among the first local outlets to report on the incident.
Investigators say the encounter didn’t actually begin where police were called. Instead, the confrontation reportedly began on the northbound Exit 14B off-ramp of the New York State Thruway and continued onto local roads through Montebello.
By the time officers arrived, the suspect vehicle was already gone, but the search didn’t last long.

Police Quickly Located the SUV With A Child Inside
Officers immediately broadcast a description of both the suspect and the vehicle to nearby units. A short time later, police spotted the SUV traveling eastbound on Route 59 and, after conducting an on-scene investigation, arrested a 32-year-old New Jersey woman in connection with the alleged road rage incident.
During the investigation, police recovered what they described as an imitation pistol that investigators believe was displayed during the confrontation. Perhaps the most surprising part of the incident, however, was who investigators say was riding in the vehicle.
According to police, the woman’s 9-year-old daughter was inside the SUV while the alleged confrontation unfolded. Authorities have not released additional details about what the child witnessed or whether anyone was physically injured during the encounter. However, investigators determined there was enough evidence to charge the driver with Endangering the Welfare of a Child in addition to several other offenses.
Police charged the woman with:
- Two counts of Menacing in the Second Degree
- Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree
- Endangering the Welfare of a Child
- Harassment in the Second Degree
She was taken to the Ramapo Police Department, where she remained in custody pending arraignment.
Why Fake Guns Can Still Lead to Real Charges
Just because a firearm turns out to be fake doesn’t necessarily mean someone can’t face criminal charges. Police say the weapon recovered in this case was an imitation pistol. During road rage incidents, investigators often focus on whether another driver reasonably believed they were being threatened, regardless of whether the firearm was capable of firing.
That’s one reason why imitation firearms can still result in serious criminal charges when they’re allegedly used to intimidate someone during a confrontation. Unfortunately, road rage incidents have become increasingly common across the country, and police continue reminding drivers that it’s almost never worth engaging with an aggressive motorist.
If another driver becomes confrontational, experts recommend avoiding eye contact, giving the other vehicle plenty of space, and calling law enforcement if you believe you’re in danger, rather than responding with more aggression.

As news of the arrest exploded online, Facebook lit up with reactions—and nobody held back.
Some were outraged, demanding to know how anyone could allegedly brandish what looked like a handgun with a 9-year-old girl sitting helplessly in the back seat. “What kind of mother does this in front of her child?” one comment fumed. Others, perhaps trying to lighten the mood, joked that the woman might be just looking for “a cool place to spend a few nights during this heatwave,” a not-so-subtle nod to the county jail.
And as the headlines spread, plenty of users wanted answers: Why hadn’t the police released her name? Who was this 32-year-old New Jersey driver at the center of the chaos? For now, those questions remain unanswered as the criminal case moves through the court system.
