A gray Jeep Cherokee was spotted in the Pomona area in Howell, Missouri, with a stolen license plate, capturing the attention of the Howell County Sheriff’s Office. The call happened at around 3:21 pm on May 21 and indicated that the vehicle might be associated with several multi-state burglaries.
Approximately five minutes later, deputies approached the Jeep Cherokee to initiate a traffic stop. However, after the vehicle slowed down, it immediately accelerated and initiated a pursuit that ended on foot.
In an attempt to evade deputies, the driver drove through residential neighborhoods until finally stopping in a private drive off Terra Street. The suspects exited the car and continued the chase on foot before being taken into custody by Howell County deputies.
Once the suspects were captured and the stolen vehicle was searched, it was revealed that they had a large quantity of jewelry. Some of the items included rings, bracelets, necklaces, and even loose gemstones.
Police Pursuit Ends in Recovered Jewelry
According to Homeland Security Investigations, it is believed that the jewelry was taken in recent burglaries across several states, including Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi. It is also suggested that the suspects had just been involved in a different robbery in Springfield that same day.
Both of the suspects who were taken into custody refused to provide consistent identifying information, but HSI was able to help positively identify them. The names of neither of the two suspects have not been revealed to the public, though it is believed that they are from Chile and are in the United States illegally.
Currently, all of the evidence has been collected from both within and outside the immediate area of the vehicle, which was turned over to federal police. It is unclear exactly how any pieces of jewelry were recovered.
A Group Effort Stopped the Suspects
The suspects were able to be apprehended thanks to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, West Plains Police Department, Oxford, Mississippi Police Department, the Howell County Sheriff’s Office, and Homeland Security Investigations. The situation would have likely turned out differently without the joint cooperation of each agency.
Of this, Sheriff Matt Roberts wrote, “I am extremely proud of the work done by our deputies and our partner agencies in bringing this situation to a safe conclusion. This case is a strong example of what happens when criminals try to operate across jurisdictions and underestimate the coordination between local, state, and federal partners.
Because of that teamwork, two individuals believed to be responsible for crimes across multiple states are now in custody.”
Reactions to Stolen Jewelry Being Recovered
Various users took to the comments section of the Facebook post above to share their opinions on the situation, with many praising the actions of the police involved. One person wrote, “Thanks for the work of our law enforcement officers keeping us safe!! God Bless you all!”
Another commenter wrote that they hoped the evidence would be returned to their rightful owners, writing, “Great work officers! I hope people are able to recover items precious because of who gave them the gift or what was being celebrated at the time they received the gift. Then send them back to where they came from.” Another commenter wrote, “Lock them up here in the USA. That way, we know where they are. Hopefully, the rightful owners of the jewelry are allowed to get it back. Before it gets “LOST” in evidence.”
There was also one comment that mentioned Super Bowl rings, saying, “Any Super Bowl rings? Chile is where Mahomes and Kelsey robbers were from.” Additionally, information about the offenses that the suspects were charged with has not been revealed.
