I’d like to think that one of the universal truths of suburban neighborhoods has been that if someone knocks on your door trying to sell meat out of the back of a truck, you’re probably better off pretending you aren’t home. Whether it’s because the deal seems too good to be true or because you have absolutely no idea how long those steaks have been sitting there, it’s usually a hard pass.
Police in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, would probably agree. What started as a report of two men selling steaks door-to-door without the required permit quickly turned into something much bigger after officers claimed they discovered marijuana, firearms, and even a stolen gun inside the pickup truck.
According to the Greensburg Police Department, officers were called to Glenview Avenue and Beech Street after a concerned resident noticed two men selling frozen steaks and other meat products from a freezer mounted in the bed of a white pickup truck.
Residents described the truck as slowly driving through the neighborhood before stopping every so often to speak with homeowners. One witness told local outlet WTAE that it seemed unusual for the area, especially since the truck had no company markings or branding.
The Freezer Full of Steaks Was Somehow the Least Weird Part
Police say the two men, identified as Mylique Ryshaude Fisher and Malik Demontae Wilson, both from Maryland, were seen selling steaks to at least one woman before officers made contact. Detective Sgt. Justin Scalzo explained that anyone going door-to-door selling products within the city is required to have a solicitation permit, and neither man had one.
That alone may have resulted in a citation. Instead, officers say they immediately smelled burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle, opening the door to a much larger investigation. Officers then found what appeared to be multiple marijuana cigarettes near the driver’s seat, along with several bags of marijuana inside the truck. That solved that mystery.
Police also reported finding a handgun underneath the driver’s seat. Before the arrests were made, investigators learned that Wilson had an active warrant related to a DUI case out of York County.
From Steaks to Stolen Guns in Record Time
Of course, a second firearm was also found when officers continued their search. Detective Sgt. Scalzo credited the concerned resident who called police, saying the report ultimately led officers to what they described as a significant arrest.
He also reminded residents that legitimate door-to-door solicitors in Greensburg are required to carry proof of their solicitation permit. If someone unexpectedly shows up trying to sell products from their vehicle, residents are encouraged to ask for that documentation or simply decline the sale altogether.
Honestly, buying steaks from the back of a stranger’s pickup truck already feels like one of those decisions you’d probably regret halfway through grilling dinner. Finding out police recovered drugs, multiple guns, and a stolen firearm from that same truck makes the choice seem a whole lot easier.
Sometimes trusting your instincts really is the best bargain you’ll find.
