Buying a Bugatti Veyron is expensive enough, but having it arrive in pieces is something else entirely. British YouTuber and car collector Mark McCann is now facing the reality of that decision after purchasing a heavily modified Bugatti Veyron that may require hundreds of thousands of dollars in repairs before it can return to the road.
The car, previously owned by a Middle Eastern royal, had reportedly spent years disassembled across various garages before McCann acquired it for around $1.2 million. What initially looked like a risky, but potentially rewarding restoration project has turned into a complicated mechanical headache involving gearbox failures, corrosion issues, missing components, and uncertainty over the car’s long-term value.
The Veyron itself remains one of the most iconic hypercars ever built. Produced between 2005 and 2015, the model helped redefine performance standards with its quad-turbocharged W16 engine and top speed exceeding 250mph. But maintaining one has always been notoriously expensive, even for owners of fully functioning examples.
A Hypercar Project That Arrived in Pieces
According to videos documenting the build, the Bugatti had been partially dismantled for years before McCann bought it. The car originally started life as a standard Veyron before receiving a Mansory-inspired transformation designed to resemble the ultra-rare Pur Sang edition.
These modifications included extensive carbon fiber additions and cosmetic upgrades. However, the car’s condition quickly overshadowed its appearance. Reports state that major hardware was missing, aluminum body panels were damaged, and the interior had deteriorated badly while the car sat unused.
The biggest issue centered on the gearbox. McCann discovered the transmission had not functioned properly for years, with the car reportedly unable to engage reverse gear long before it was taken apart. What initially seemed like a straightforward replacement soon became much more serious after specialists found signs of galvanic corrosion inside the gearbox housing.
That type of corrosion occurs when dissimilar metals react with each other over time. In this case, steel and aluminum components inside the transmission appear to have deteriorated due to contamination caused during previous repair work.
Why Bugatti Couldn’t Simply Fix the Problem

One of the most surprising discoveries during the rebuild was that Bugatti could not directly repair the damaged gearbox. Instead, the company reportedly only offers complete sealed-unit replacements for the Veyron’s transmission system.
That creates a major financial problem because replacement gearboxes for the Veyron can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Early estimates suggested the repair bill on McCann’s car could reach $600,000 if a full factory replacement became necessary.
Specialists later examined the gearbox in the Netherlands and found significant metal debris blocking hydraulic channels, along with clutch wear. Those findings raised hopes that the unit might still be repairable outside Bugatti’s official network at a much lower cost. Estimates for an independent rebuild reportedly dropped closer to $27,000, although the final outcome remains uncertain until the gearbox is fully tested in the car.
The situation highlights the unique difficulties tied to restoring older hypercars. Unlike mainstream performance vehicles, many Veyron components are highly specialized and available only through limited channels. Even routine maintenance on functioning cars can cost tens of thousands of dollars annually.
Enthusiasts Are Split Over Whether the Risk Will Pay Off

The project has sparked major debate among car enthusiasts online. Some believe McCann may still come out ahead financially if the repair costs remain manageable and the Veyron’s value continues increasing. Others argue that the car’s history, modifications, and uncertain condition make it a dangerous investment.
Questions have also been raised about the authenticity of the build itself. Enthusiasts noted the car was not originally a factory Pur Sang model, despite being converted to resemble one through aftermarket modifications.
Still, there is no denying the attention the restoration has generated. High-profile hypercar rebuilds have become a major source of online content for automotive creators, particularly when rare and notoriously expensive vehicles are involved.
