What began as an ordinary drive home ended in a dramatic rescue after a Regina woman became trapped inside her sinking SUV near Craven, Saskatchewan.
Marjorie Flavel was traveling back to Regina on July 5 after visiting a relative in Bulyea when her vehicle left Highway 20 and entered a water-filled slough (or swamp/marsh for Americans). With water rapidly rising inside the SUV, Flavel found herself unable to open the doors and faced a life-threatening situation.
Unable to swim, she searched for a window-breaking tool but was unable to find it as the vehicle continued to fill with water.
Dog Rescued First
Flavel’s greatest concern was not herself, but her small dog, Angel. After the frightened pet escaped from its kennel, Flavel lifted her above the rising water while waiting for help.
Several motorists stopped after noticing the submerged vehicle. As they watched the SUV continue to sink, some feared there would not be enough time to wait for emergency responders.
CBS reported among those who stopped was Matt Mario, who had been driving home with his father. Realizing every second mattered, he entered the slough and made his way to the stranded vehicle.
Escape Through the Sunroof
After discovering the SUV’s doors would not open, Mario climbed onto the roof. Flavel was able to manually crank open the sunroof, creating the only possible escape route.
Before leaving the vehicle herself, she insisted Angel be brought to safety first. Another bystander carried the dog to shore while Mario helped Flavel climb through the opening. Working together, several people then assisted the shaken senior back onto dry land.
Although the incident was frightening, 980 CJME revealed that both Flavel and Angel escaped without physical injuries.
Rescue Leaves Lasting Impression
Speaking after the ordeal, Flavel described believing she would not survive as the water continued to rise inside the vehicle. She said she is deeply grateful to the strangers who stepped in when she needed them most.
Mario has downplayed his actions, saying he simply did what he believed anyone should do in the same situation. However, many have praised the rescuers for their quick thinking and courage.
The incident serves as a reminder that ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference. Had the bystanders hesitated, the outcome could have been very different. Instead, their willingness to act ensured both Flavel and Angel returned home safely.
