A late-night run for donuts, honey buns, pound cake, and a fountain drink ended up costing one Louisiana man a lot more than $19.88.
The Shreveport Police Department said the story began around 12:34 a.m. on Aug. 11, when officers responded to the Circle K at 809 Olive Street in Shreveport. A store clerk reported that a man selected several bakery items, filled a fountain drink, and walked out without paying.
The haul included three packages of small donuts, two packages of honey buns, one package of pound cake, and the fountain drink. Altogether, the snacks were valued at $19.88.
An officer searched the surrounding area but initially couldn’t find the man. A short time later, a man matching the description returned to the Circle K while police were still nearby. Officers detained him and identified him as 18-year-old John Alex Jordan.
From Empty Calories to Facing Charges
During the investigation, officers linked Jordan to the recent burglary of the Elks Lodge, where multiple items were reported stolen. He was subsequently charged in connection with that burglary. It was also discovered that he had an outstanding theft warrant stemming from a separate case.
Jordan faced one count of theft and one count of simple burglary, along with the previously outstanding theft warrant. The department had some fun with his decision to return to the store in a Facebook post about the arrest, writing, “Apparently, returning to the scene really does work. Just not in the way he probably hoped.”
Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office records show he was booked into Caddo Correctional Center at 6:39 p.m. on Aug. 12 under booking number 2026-00004146. The jail record lists Jordan as 18 years old and as still in jail when it was generated on the morning of Aug. 14.
Facebook Had Thoughts About the $19.88 Snack Run
After SPD shared the arrest on Facebook, the $19.88 price tag caught commenters’ attention. “A couple snacks and a drink being $20 is the real crime here!” one commenter wrote. Calling it a couple of snacks might be underselling the order a little. Three packages of donuts, two packages of honey buns, a package of pound cake, and a fountain drink brought the total to $19.88.
The decision to return also drew attention. “Why you go back fool, you had enough snacks for that night lol,” one commenter wrote. The officer had already searched the surrounding area without finding Jordan. He returned to the Circle K a short time later while police were still nearby.
SPD closed its own post with some simple advice for anyone facing a similar midnight craving: paying the $19.88 is “considerably cheaper than the alternative.”
Jordan is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
