A Louisiana man’s attempt to explain himself during a routine traffic stop took an unexpected turn when he showed a sheriff’s deputy what appeared to be a law enforcement badge. Unfortunately for him, a quick phone call to another sheriff’s office revealed a rather important problem: he wasn’t actually employed there.

According to the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office, 55-year-old Bryan P. Barrios of Thibodaux was arrested on October 12, 2026, after a deputy stopped him for speeding along Louisiana Highway 398 west of Labadieville. What initially appeared to be an ordinary traffic violation quickly developed into an investigation involving two law enforcement badges sitting on the passenger seat.

Sheriff Leland Falcon said the uniformed deputy noticed the badges in plain view while speaking with Barrios during the stop. Barrios then displayed one of the badges to the deputy and explained that he was returning from another parish in southwestern Louisiana.

Rather than simply accepting the explanation, deputies contacted the sheriff’s office in the parish Barrios referenced to verify his connection to the agency. That conversation ultimately resulted in Barrios being arrested on a felony charge of fraudulent portrayal of a law enforcement officer or firefighter.

The Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office said the encounter began Monday afternoon when a patrol deputy observed a vehicle traveling faster than the posted speed limit. After stopping the vehicle along Highway 398, the deputy approached the driver and noticed two law enforcement badges positioned on the front passenger seat.

Barrios displayed one of the badges during the encounter and indicated that he had just returned from another parish in southwestern Louisiana. Deputies subsequently contacted that parish’s sheriff’s office, whose representatives confirmed that Barrios was not a member of their department.

Investigators also learned that a similar incident involving Barrios had occurred previously with another sheriff’s office, although authorities did not provide details about that encounter. Deputies seized both badges and arrested Barrios, bringing an unexpected end to what had started as a speeding stop.

Louisiana Man Faces Felony Charge

Following his arrest, Barrios was transported to the Assumption Parish Detention Center and booked on a felony charge of fraudulent portrayal of a law enforcement officer or firefighter. The sheriff’s office initially announced that he remained incarcerated pending a bond hearing, but the accompanying detention record provides additional information about his case.

According to the Assumption Parish inmate listing, Barrios was booked on October 12, 2026, under Louisiana Revised Statute 14:112.2. The record lists a $2,500 surety bond set by Judge Kliebert, although it does not establish whether Barrios subsequently posted that bond or was released.

Authorities have not explained where Barrios obtained the badges or whether he used them during any encounters beyond those referenced in the investigation. For now, the 55-year-old faces a felony accusation stemming from a traffic stop in which the badges on his passenger seat attracted considerably more attention than the original speeding violation.
