Mercedes-AMG has unveiled an electric SUV with enough power to embarrass some of the world’s fastest supercars. Called the AMG GT SUV, the newcomer combines extraordinary performance figures with the space and practicality expected from a luxury family vehicle.

The headline-grabbing version is the GT63, which produces up to 1,153 horsepower and can reportedly accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.4 seconds. Those are extraordinary numbers for a vehicle weighing approximately 5,700 pounds.

Unveiled in Stuttgart, the GT SUV follows the electric AMG GT 4-Door Coupe introduced earlier this year. Both vehicles share Mercedes-AMG’s dedicated AMG.EA architecture, although the SUV offers additional interior space and larger battery options.

Interestingly, this is also the first SUV developed entirely by Mercedes-AMG rather than adapted from an existing Mercedes-Benz platform. The result is a vehicle designed around high performance from the outset.

The lineup includes GT53, GT55, and GT63 variants, each offering a different level of performance. The entry-level GT53 uses two electric motors producing a total of 536 horsepower, while the GT55 increases output to 805 horsepower.

The flagship GT63 features three axial-flux electric motors, with one powering the front axle and two driving the rear wheels. Together, they deliver a peak output of 1,153 horsepower and 1,475 lb-ft of torque.

The GT55 and GT63 also feature a sophisticated cooling system designed to sustain demanding performance driving. Mercedes-AMG quotes up to 711 horsepower of sustained output, distinguishing it from the much higher short-duration peak figures.

Big Batteries And Clever Suspension

The GT55 and GT63 use a 128-kWh battery, with a claimed WLTP driving range of up to 434 miles. The GT53 gets a smaller 106-kWh pack, with a quoted range of up to 363 miles.

Mercedes also claims DC fast-charging capability of up to 710 kW for the larger battery and 600 kW for the smaller one. Actual charging performance will depend on suitable infrastructure and operating conditions.

Meanwhile, AMG Active Ride Control+ uses adjustable air suspension and hydraulic systems to counteract body roll and pitch. The technology is intended to keep the heavy SUV stable during hard acceleration, braking, and cornering.

Inside, the GT SUV features a driver-oriented digital dashboard, Mercedes’ MB.OS infotainment system, and a spacious rear seating area. Available reclining rear seats add a welcome touch of comfort.

For those missing the sound of combustion engines, AMG has also included simulated engine sounds and gear changes, a feature that’s likely to divide opinion among driving enthusiasts.

U.S. pricing hasn’t been announced, although the GT SUV is expected to arrive stateside in 2027. With its remarkable performance figures, it promises to be one of the most extreme electric family vehicles Mercedes has ever produced.
