Singapore Changi Airport has once again been crowned the world’s best airport, capturing the prestigious 2025 Skytrax World Airport Award for a record-breaking 13th time and reclaiming its title from Qatar’s Hamad International Airport. With increasingly fierce competition from luxury hubs worldwide, the question remains: what makes an airport truly “the best”?
Unprecedented Dominance in Global Rankings
Singapore’s Changi Airport has been recognized as the world’s best, topping the 2025 Skytrax World Airport Awards and reclaiming the honor from Qatar’s Hamad International Airport, which led the rankings in 2024. The victory represents a return to form for the Singapore hub, which has dominated airport rankings for over a decade.
Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted called it “a great achievement for Singapore Changi Airport to receive the highest award as the World’s Best Airport 2025, this being a record-breaking 13th time in the awards history that they have scooped this award”.
Comprehensive Award Sweep
Changi’s 2025 victory was comprehensive, earning multiple categories beyond the top prize. Other significant awards for Singapore Changi Airport include the World’s Best Airport Dining, the World’s Best Airport Washrooms (first-ever winner), and the Best Airport in Asia.
The Skytrax rankings were based on a global survey conducted between August 2024 and February 2025, which gathered responses from over 13 million travelers representing more than 100 nationalities. Passengers rated their experiences across key performance indicators from check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, and security/immigration through to departure at the gate.
The Jewel That Sets Changi Apart

What distinguishes Changi from competitors is its revolutionary approach to airport design, epitomized by the $1.7 billion Jewel complex. Jewel Changi Airport is a nature-themed entertainment and retail complex with the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, the Rain Vortex, which is 40 meters tall and surrounded by a terraced forest setting.
The Jewel has a total of 2,000 trees and 100,000 shrubs, plus a canopy park on the fifth level, which is packed with family activities. The Forest Valley is one of Asia’s largest indoor gardens, spanning five stories and approximately 22,000 square meters, housing around 3,000 trees and 60,000 shrubs of 120 species.
Unique Passenger Experiences
Beyond the architectural marvels, Changi offers amenities unmatched by any other airport globally. The Butterfly Garden in Terminal 3 features over 1,000 tropical butterflies from 40 different species fluttering freely in a two-level design that gives visitors an eye-level view of these creatures in flight.
Travelers can enjoy facilities like free movie theaters, the world’s first airport butterfly garden filled with exotic species, and a rooftop swimming pool offering a relaxing view of the runway.
Evening Entertainment and Technology
When the sky outside darkens, the continuous pour of the Jewel Rain Vortex becomes a Light & Music Showcase, with the sheet of water transforming into a stunning display. The Changi Experience Studio features over 20 touchpoints and 10 content zones, including interactive games, immersive shows and digital exhibits, many of which use first-in-Asia technology.
Strong Competition Challenges Dominance
Despite Changi’s victory, competition remains fierce. Doha’s Hamad International Airport, a three-time previous winner, ranked second in the 2025 list and was also recognized for offering the world’s best airport shopping and named the best airport in the Middle East.
Overall, Asian airports led the rankings at the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2025, with Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita, and Seoul’s Incheon rounding out the top five, highlighting the region’s investment in premium airport infrastructure.
Measurable Impact on Passenger Experience
Travel journalist Christopher Muther noted the efficiency of Changi’s immigration process, which “includes filling out a questionnaire in an app, scanning a QR code, and walking through an automatic gate that uses biometrics to confirm your identity,” taking approximately one minute.
Jewel receives about 300,000 visitors per day, and in October 2019, six months after its soft opening, it had welcomed 50 million visitors, exceeding its initial target for the whole year.
Award Credibility and Industry Recognition
The World Airport Awards are prestigious accolades voted by customers in the largest annual global airport customer satisfaction survey, and have been referred to as the “Oscars of the airport industry”. Changi Airport has been recognized with 704 awards to date, demonstrating consistent excellence across multiple evaluation criteria.
The Verdict: More Than Just an Airport
Changi Airport CEO Yam Kum Weng emphasized the facility’s philosophy: “We’re especially grateful to the Changi Airport community, whose unwavering commitment to service excellence has made this award possible”.
Whether Changi truly deserves the title of “world’s best” ultimately depends on what travelers value most. For those seeking efficiency, innovation, and experiences that transcend traditional airport functions, Changi’s record-breaking achievements suggest it has successfully redefined what an airport can be. As one visitor noted, “There was no question that I should have booked another day or two to cover all 10 floors plus tour the city”.
In an era where airports compete not just on convenience but on creating memorable experiences, Changi Airport’s 13th victory suggests that blending nature, technology, and hospitality remains the winning formula for passenger satisfaction.
