A bizarre act of revenge outside a Publix in Ormond-by-the-Sea turned into a nightmare for an innocent mother of four after a man smashed the wrong SUV with a hammer.

According to deputies in Volusia County, 37-year-old Justin Allen allegedly broke into a sport utility vehicle parked outside the grocery store, believing it belonged to his ex-girlfriend.

Investigators say he thought he was settling a score after claiming she had tried to rob him the night before. Instead, he targeted a vehicle that had nothing to do with his personal dispute.

Police bodycam shows cops confronting Allen in the parking lot. As commands rang out telling him to put his hands behind his back, the damage had already been done.

The SUV’s windows were shattered. Glass littered the seats. The radio had been ripped apart. Inside, the destruction was unmistakable. And that was how a supermarket employee’s shift at work turned into a devastating ordeal.

Authorities say the SUV actually belonged to a mom of four who just happened to work at Publix. Her crime was to park outside the supermarket while working, unaware that her vehicle would become the outlet for someone else’s anger.

Deputies noted that Allen appeared to have mistaken the SUV for his former partner’s vehicle, though it remains unclear how he confused the two.

For the employee, the damage created immediate hardship. Beyond the shock of seeing her car vandalized, she was left without reliable transportation. She had no rental coverage through her insurance policy while repairs were underway.

That meant arranging rides, leaning on family, and scrambling to maintain her daily routine, including getting to work and transporting her children.

The incident could have ended there as just another unfortunate crime story. Instead, it caught the attention of someone who shops at that Publix regularly.

Local Dealer Steps Up With a Loaner and a Lifeline

Zach Yman, the general manager and owner of Daytona Nissan and Daytona Infiniti, visits the store at least once a week. He says he knows the staff and describes them as consistently kind and friendly. When he heard what happened, he reached out to the employee directly.

What he learned made the situation even more troubling. The mother was still shaken and now faced the prospect of being without a car while repairs dragged on. She was relying on her own mother for rides just to get to work. Being carless is hardly just an inconvenience, and for a household with four children, the loss is a disruption to nearly every part of daily life.

Yman decided to act fast. He arranged for her to have a replacement vehicle at no cost. No rental fees. No strings attached. He also committed to helping ensure her damaged SUV would be sorted out at a body shop. His message to her was simple: drive the loaner as long as you need.

Community Rallies as Suspect Faces Charges

The gesture provided immediate relief. With a car back in her driveway, the employee could return to some sense of normalcy. She could commute to work on her own schedule and make sure her children got where they needed to be.

While she remains shaken by the experience, she no longer has to worry about how to keep her household moving.

As for Allen, he now faces charges tied to the alleged vandalism and break-in. What he reportedly believed was an act of revenge ended up harming a stranger and drawing swift law enforcement response.

In the end, a violent mistake in a grocery store parking lot became a reminder of how quickly anger can spiral out of control. It also became a story about community. One family’s routine was shattered in minutes, but a local dealership stepped in just as quickly to make sure their wheels kept turning.
