If you have ever wrestled your way into a pair of skinny jeans or tried to squeeze your carry-on into an overhead bin that is clearly three inches too small, you may have a faint appreciation for what unfolded in Muskegon Heights, Michigan, one Saturday afternoon. A woman placed under arrest managed to shimmy herself backward out of a partially open rear window of a police cruiser, hands cuffed behind her back, and simply walked away. The officers were busy searching another vehicle nearby. They had no idea she was gone.
The whole thing happened around 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of Norton Avenue and Peck Street, according to the Muskegon Heights Police Department.
A patrol officer spotted a car parked near a vacant commercial building and went over to speak with the occupants. During that exchange, police could confirm the driver’s identity, but the passenger was a bit of a mystery. A second officer arrived with a fingerprint scanner, which quickly solved the mystery and revealed that the woman had an active parole violation warrant out for her.
She was taken into custody, handcuffed, and placed in the back seat of the patrol vehicle. Standard procedure. Case closed, right? Not quite.
One Leg Out the Window, and She Was Gone
Video captured by a bystander shows the woman working her way through the partially open rear window of the cruiser, arms still secured behind her back. She got one leg through, then the other, touched down on the pavement, and took off in the opposite direction from the officers. The whole maneuver looked less like a dramatic movie escape and more like someone determined not to miss a flight.
By the time officers wrapped up searching the original vehicle and turned around, she had already cleared the area. Police searched for her that afternoon without success.
Later that same evening, a resident on Peck Street called in a report of a break-in. Investigators believe the same woman is responsible, which suggests her post-escape afternoon was not particularly restful.
A Tip, a Vacant House, and the End of the Road
The search stretched into the following week with no sign of her. Then, on Tuesday morning, just after 9 a.m., a local resident called in with information about a woman matching her description holed up in a vacant home nearby. Officers responded and found her inside. The brief but eventful chapter of her freedom came to a close roughly three and a half days after it began.
The Muskegon Heights Police Department publicly thanked that citizen for the tip, which is the kind of polite acknowledgment that tends to follow a story that has already gone viral on social media and made everyone in the department’s lives considerably more complicated for a week.
The woman is now held at the Muskegon County Jail, with charges pending. The rear window on the patrol car, presumably, has since been closed.
