A 1960 Cadillac that spent roughly three decades hidden away has finally returned to the sunlight. The massive American coupe belongs to a man named Don, who had put the car aside years ago while focusing on raising his family and never got around to finishing the dream build he had planned.
The story was documented by the WD Detailing YouTube channel, which recovered the Cadillac from storage and gave it a comprehensive exterior and interior detail. The team also attempted to get the long-dormant car running again before returning it to its owner.
Getting the Cadillac out of storage was an ordeal by itself. All four tires were flat, one or more wheels were initially locked, and the car stretches close to 19 feet long while weighing nearly 5,000 pounds.
Don explained that family responsibilities had taken priority over the Cadillac, particularly while his children were involved in scouting. Later health problems, including major heart surgeries, delayed his plans further, leaving the car sitting for decades while he waited for another opportunity to enjoy it.
Getting The Cadillac Out Was The First Challenge
WD Detailing managed to inflate all four tires, although simply pushing the Cadillac out still wasn’t possible because of the locked wheels. A truck and tow strap eventually had to provide the muscle needed to drag the huge coupe into the open.
Once the car reached the shop, things started looking considerably more promising. The stuck wheels eventually freed up, allowing the Cadillac to roll normally and saving the team from immediately having to disassemble the braking hardware.
Beneath decades of dirt was a surprisingly complete car. Its giant chrome bumpers, dramatic rear fins, expansive interior, and original-looking trim were all still present, giving the detailers plenty to work with.
The Old Cadillac V8 Still Had Some Life
Before beginning the full wash, the team inspected the mechanical condition of the car. The engine bay was dirty but complete, with the belts and major components still in place and no obvious signs that rodents had caused extensive damage.
After connecting a jump pack, the engine eventually cranked over. Fresh fuel was added after attempts to drain the old tank proved unsuccessful, and the Cadillac’s V8 ultimately fired back to life.
The car has a 390-cubic-inch, or roughly 6.4-liter, Cadillac V8 producing 325 horsepower, and it ran strongly enough for the car to move under its own power, although the braking system needed attention before anyone was going very far.
The brake pedal was initially stuck, and the master cylinder contained little usable fluid. Fresh fluid and bleeding helped restore some braking capability, allowing the Cadillac to be moved more safely around the shop.
Thirty Years Of Dirt Came Off
With the mechanical basics addressed, the detailers turned their attention to the accumulated grime. The exterior received a pressure wash, foam treatment, contact wash, iron removal, clay treatment, and polishing in an effort to revive the aging paint.
The Cadillac’s enormous chrome surfaces also required extensive work after decades of oxidation. Polishing gradually brought back the reflective finish on the bumpers and trim, dramatically changing the appearance of the car.
Inside, the team removed the heavy seats and cleaned carpets that had been buried under decades of dirt and staining. The upholstery required a more careful approach because portions of the material had become fragile and were beginning to tear.
Even after all those years, the cabin retained much of its period character. Its thin steering wheel, wide horizontal speedometer, large bench-style seating, and generous use of chrome made the interior feel like a preserved piece of early-1960s American luxury.
Don Finally Got His Cadillac Back
The finished result looked dramatically different from the dusty car that had been pulled from storage. WD Detailing also kept the revived engine a surprise, telling Don that it still wasn’t running before bringing the freshly cleaned Cadillac back home.
His reaction was understated but clearly appreciative, with Don saying the car looked the way he remembered it. Once he discovered that the Cadillac could also run and drive, he and his wife were able to climb aboard and take the long-stored car out again.
Don had already said he hoped to eventually drive the Cadillac and was even planning better storage for it while preparing a new garage. After 30 years of waiting, his enormous 1960 Cadillac was finally clean, running, and back in his hands.
