Good Thing Cats Have 9 Lives: Kitten Becomes Stuck in Engine, Rescue Mission Takes Crazy Turn

A kitten in Seneca Falls, New York, was rescued twice after getting stuck in the engine compartments of two different vehicles in the same day, according to People. The Town of Seneca Falls Police Department said the kitten first became trapped inside one vehicle before officers and a local garage worker were able to free it. However, the rescue did not stay finished for long.

Police said Chris Knapp from Stever’s Garage helped officers get the kitten out of the first engine compartment. Once the kitten was safely freed, it ran away before anyone could catch it. It then went straight into the engine compartment of a second vehicle.

The second rescue took more teamwork and patience, according to the department. Police said the kitten was eventually freed again and was doing well afterward. The department thanked Knapp for helping make sure the kitten’s ordeal had a safe ending.

People reported that the kitten was a calico with dark gray, white, and orange patches. Police shared photos from the rescue, including one that showed two officers standing with Knapp as he held the kitten. Another photo showed the kitten being held safely after the second rescue.

How the Kitten Ended Up Needing Two Rescues

The kitten had been stuck in the engine compartment of a vehicle. Police didn’t say how long the kitten had been trapped or how it got into the vehicle in the first place. They also didn’t say if the vehicle had been parked the whole time or not.

After officers and Knapp freed the kitten, it was still seemingly pretty skittish. In fact, it ran off and climbed into the engine compartment of another vehicle nearby. That meant police had to rescue the same exact kitten a second time, just in a different car.

Engine Compartments Can Be Dangerous for Animals

Cats and kittens can climb into engine compartments and nest in the spaces because they’re small and warm. That can create a dangerous situation if drivers don’t know an animal is inside, and you can imagine many just don’t check in the first place. It can also make rescues difficult because the animal may be frightened and wedged into a tight area, which means you may not be able to reach them.

In this case, the kitten was found and rescued before it was seriously hurt. Police said the kitten was doing well after running off and needing to be rescued twice, though. It’s still unknown whether the kitten had an owner or where it went after being freed – it’ll likely be on its way to a new forever home soon enough.
