GM Investigates Reports of Shuddering Acceleration in Chevrolet Equinox SUVs

GM Authority reports that General Motors has launched an investigation into reports of a shaking or wobbling sensation during acceleration in certain Chevrolet Equinox models. The issue appears to affect some vehicles from the most recent generation of the popular compact crossover.

According to information circulating among dealership service departments, a small number of drivers have reported an unusual vibration when accelerating. The sensation is described as a shake or wobble that becomes noticeable during normal driving conditions.

In many cases it occurs when the vehicle is picking up speed rather than when cruising at a steady pace.

The Chevrolet Equinox is one of General Motors’ best-selling SUVs in North America. Because of its popularity, even a limited number of complaints can attract attention quickly among owners and service technicians.

What Drivers Are Experiencing

Drivers who have encountered the issue say the vibration can occur during moderate or stronger acceleration. The feeling has been described as a brief shudder that runs through the vehicle. It may appear intermittently rather than constantly.

Technicians have noted that the behavior may appear when the transmission is operating in lower gears, particularly when the vehicle is accelerating in a low second gear range. This situation can place additional load on the drivetrain components, which may reveal vibrations that are otherwise difficult to detect.

At this stage there is no official confirmation that all affected vehicles share the same mechanical cause. Engineers are still collecting data from dealerships and owner reports.

Internal Investigation Underway

General Motors has informed dealership technicians about the situation through internal service communications. These messages alert technicians to the symptoms and encourage them to report cases where customers describe similar vibrations.

Internal bulletins like this are often used by automakers to gather real world feedback from service centers. By tracking reports from across different regions, engineers can determine whether a pattern exists and what conditions trigger the problem.

According to GMA, the bulletin, tagged as PIT6466, was released last December, affecting Equinox crossovers produced between the 2025 and 2026 model years.

Once engineers identify a consistent cause, the manufacturer may issue a technical service bulletin that outlines a repair procedure for dealerships.

No Recall Announced

At the moment, there is no recall related to the reported acceleration shake. The investigation is still in its early stages and General Motors has not confirmed the exact source of the vibration.

Automakers frequently investigate drivability complaints before deciding whether further action is required. Many issues are resolved through software updates, revised components, or service procedures provided to dealers.

For Chevy Equinox owners, the best course of action is to contact a local dealership if they notice unusual vibrations during acceleration. Service technicians can inspect the vehicle and record the symptoms, which also helps engineers gather more information.

A Key Model for GM

The Equinox plays a major role in General Motors’ SUV lineup and remains one of the company’s highest volume vehicles. The SUV’s comparative affordability, practicality, and fuel efficiency has made it a common choice for families and city commuters.

Because of that popularity, any potential issue involving drivability is likely to draw attention from both customers and industry observers. General Motors will likely move quickly to determine whether the vibration reports represent an isolated issue or a broader mechanical concern.

The 2025 Equinox launched its fourth generation with a turbocharged 1.5L I4 engine producing 175 hp and up to 203 lb-ft of torque in AWD models. It rides on GM’s D2 platform and is built in Mexico.

Industry tests show 24–26 mpg city and 28–29 mpg highway, which is competitive for compact SUVs. J.D. Power rated the driving experience at 81/100.

The Equinox’s Reliability

J.D. Power’s Quality & Reliability score of 76 out of 100 places the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox in the “average” range. That suggests owners reported a moderate number of defects or malfunctions compared to other vehicles in the same class. It’s not a poor showing, but it doesn’t stand out as exceptional either.

By contrast, U.S. News gave the Equinox a much stronger reliability rating of 88 out of 100, and importantly, noted that no recalls had been issued by the NHTSA for the 2025 model year. That paints a picture of a vehicle that, at least from a safety and defect-reporting standpoint, is performing well above average.

Consumer sentiment adds another layer. Edmunds reviews averaged 4.2 out of 5 stars from 37 owners, which is generally positive. The distribution is telling: More than two-thirds of reviewers gave it the highest rating, while a small minority—about 8 percent—gave it the lowest.

This kind of split often means most buyers are satisfied with the vehicle’s comfort, features, and reliability, but there are some who experienced issues or felt expectations weren’t met.

In the meantime, more details about the ongoing investigation into acceleration vibrations are expected as engineers continue to evaluate dealership reports and analyze affected vehicles.
