A Georgia man riding a stolen moped had an unusual explanation when a sheriff’s corporal questioned him about it.

He said he didn’t steal the moped because he bought it from God, according to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.

Cpl. Burket made the traffic stop on Eatonton Highway. The sheriff’s office said the man was riding without a helmet and had a revoked driver’s license.

That wasn’t the only problem. Burket also learned that the moped was stolen.

When the rider was told the moped was stolen, he denied stealing it. Instead, he claimed he had purchased it from God.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office shared the encounter on Facebook as part of its “Frontline Friday” series.

What the Sheriff’s Video Shows

One shot shows the man standing beside the moped with his arms crossed.

Another shot shows him sitting in the back of a patrol vehicle. In the video posted to Facebook, he said, “I bought it brand new from God.”

The sheriff’s office ended its Facebook post with a comment about the unusual encounter. “You just never know what our deputies are going to run into out here in Morgan County.”

People also had questions in the Facebook comments. Michelle McCullough asked, “Wait, was that ID a Pokémon card??” while Tolie Durden wanted to know, “Wonder will God sell me a 69 Chevelle for 1/2 off?”

What Are Georgia’s Rules for Moped Riders?

According to the Georgia Department of Driver Services, moped riders must have a valid driver’s license or permit and wear a DOT-approved motorcycle helmet.

Mopeds don’t need license plates, but riders must follow the same traffic laws as other drivers. They’re also prohibited from using limited-access highways and roads with a minimum speed limit over 35 mph.
