A Georgia traffic stop went from speeding ticket territory to something considerably worse after a driver took off with a woman and a three-month-old infant still sitting in the back seat. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office says the Nissan Rogue eventually struck a tree, at which point the driver abandoned his passengers and continued his escape on foot.
H.E.A.T. Unit Cpl. Dalton Palmer initially stopped the Rogue on Forest Hill Road after its driver was clocked traveling 31 mph over the posted speed limit. The driver initially pulled over, but as Palmer approached and spotted the woman and infant inside, the SUV suddenly sped away.
Palmer soon came upon the Nissan after it had crashed into a tree, but the person behind the wheel apparently wasn’t sticking around to explain himself. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the driver jumped out and ran from the wreck on foot.
Instead of immediately chasing after him, Palmer remained at the SUV to check on the two people the driver had just left behind. His attention particularly turned toward the three-month-old infant, with Palmer requesting an ambulance so the child could receive medical attention.
Deputy Chooses the Baby Over Chasing the Driver
That decision meant the fleeing driver got a head start, but it also ensured the most vulnerable person involved in the crash wasn’t left waiting for help. The Sheriff’s Office did not detail the extent of any injuries to the infant or woman in its post.
Investigators subsequently determined that the driver did not have a valid license. Deputies also discovered what the Sheriff’s Office described as illegal drugs and weapons inside the Nissan, adding another layer to a traffic stop that had originally begun over excessive speed.
The Sheriff’s Office’s post did not identify the driver or specify which drugs and weapons were recovered. It also did not state whether the person had since been apprehended, leaving the driver’s whereabouts unclear based on the information released.
What is clear is how quickly the situation escalated from a speeding stop into a crash involving an infant. Going 31 mph over the limit was already enough to attract Palmer’s attention, but fleeing with two passengers inside transformed the encounter into something much more dangerous.
Comments and Reactions to the Bibb County Traffic Stop
Commenters were especially supportive of Palmer’s decision to stay behind rather than chase the fleeing driver, with one summing up the priority rather neatly: “Good call Deputy Palmer! Baby first.” Another said the deputy “made the right choice” by remaining with the woman and infant and hoped authorities would catch the driver soon.
Others couldn’t get past the fact that somebody would flee at high speed and ultimately crash with a three-month-old along for the ride. “All that with a baby in the car?” one person asked, while another called the driver’s actions selfish and said he had endangered both passengers’ lives.
Palmer himself also received plenty of praise, including jokes that his traffic enforcement exploits might be ready for television. One commenter declared that “Palmer the punisher strikes again,” while another joked he was about to get his own TruTV show, but the most important part of this particular episode was considerably less funny: when the chase reached a wrecked SUV, Palmer chose the baby over the runner.
