FTC Says Car Dealership Group Charged Buyers $3,350 More Than Advertised

The Federal Trade Commission has reached a proposed settlement with Greenway Auto Group after accusing the dealership operator of advertising vehicles for thousands of dollars less than customers actually paid.

The FTC announced the agreement on October 8, 2026, alleging that in more than 92% of transactions, customers paid an average of more than $3,350 above the advertised price.

The complaint describes a pricing system in which mandatory dealership fees, packages, and penalties increased vehicle costs beyond the amounts displayed in advertisements. Many shoppers also found some advertised discounts unavailable.

Greenway has agreed to change its advertising practices under a proposed federal court order. The agreement would require the company to prominently disclose the actual vehicle price, excluding only government-required charges.

Thousands in Extra Fees

The FTC identified administrative, dealer, delivery, and processing fees among the charges allegedly added to advertised prices.

The complaint also claims that Greenway promoted conditional rebates and discounts without making clear that only certain customers qualified.

That meant shoppers could end up paying a substantially higher price after selecting a vehicle based on its advertisement.

The FTC also accused Greenway of distributing promotional mailers telling recipients they had won thousands of dollars in cash prizes available for collection at a dealership. The agency alleges the promised prizes were not genuine.

Previous FTC Warning

The settlement follows a March 2026 warning from the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection addressing Greenway’s advertising practices.

Rather than correcting the alleged pricing problems, the company added misleading claims about pricing transparency to its websites while continuing to advertise vehicles below their actual prices, the FTC complaint states.

The agency’s federal case identifies several Greenway dealerships in Florida, including Greenway Kia at the Avenues, Greenway Kia North, Greenway Kia East, Greenway Kia West, and Greenway Hyundai Orlando.

What Changes for Buyers

Under the proposed settlement, Greenway would be prohibited from misrepresenting whether fees, products, services, or financing arrangements are mandatory.

The restrictions would also prohibit deceptive prize promotions and require advertised vehicle prices to reflect what consumers must actually pay, apart from government-required charges.

The agreement does not establish that every Greenway transaction involved deceptive pricing, and the FTC’s allegations should not be treated as findings of liability.

The FTC voted 2-0 to authorize the complaint and stipulated final order, which were filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida.

The order becomes legally enforceable once a federal judge approves and signs it.
