There’s a big difference between seeing someone swimming far from shore and realizing they might not want to come back. For deputies in Martin County, Florida, figuring out which situation they were dealing with meant there wasn’t much time to waste.
According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to assist a man who was extremely distressed and had said he planned to swim into the ocean “in hopes of not returning.” Marine deputies, the department’s Aviation Unit, and a Martin County lifeguard were all involved in trying to locate him.
By the time first responders found the man, the Sheriff’s Office says he was significantly offshore. Deputies also quickly realized that he remained in serious emotional distress, turning what might otherwise look like an ocean rescue into something considerably more complicated.
Fortunately, deputies weren’t going to let him disappear into the water. They jumped in, reached the man, and ultimately managed to pull him from the ocean safely.

Footage shared by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office shows just how far first responders had to go to reach the man. With help from the department’s Aviation and Marine units, responders were able to locate him offshore before moving in.
The Sheriff’s Office said “time was not on their side” as deputies worked alongside a Martin County lifeguard. Once responders reached the man and recognized the seriousness of his condition, deputies entered the water themselves.
That’s also where their job became considerably more than simply bringing someone back to shore. The man had gone into the ocean intending not to return, meaning the people trying to rescue him were also trying to help someone who, at that moment, didn’t necessarily want to be saved.
Thankfully, responders were successful. The Sheriff’s Office said the man was safely pulled from the water and was subsequently on his way to receive help.
Sheriff’s Office Praises Responders for Refusing to Give Up
The department specifically thanked its Marine deputies, Aviation Unit pilot, and the Martin County lifeguard involved in the rescue. Their combined response allowed authorities to locate the man and reach him before the situation ended differently.
The Sheriff’s Office also used the incident to recognize the difficult position first responders can find themselves in during these calls. Sometimes the person they’re trying to rescue is also actively struggling against the idea of being rescued.
The department thanked its personnel for “never giving up,” even when helping someone experiencing a moment where they feel like they don’t want that help. In this case, that persistence meant the man made it out of the ocean alive.
No additional information about the man’s identity or circumstances was released in the department’s post. The most important update was simply that he survived and was being connected with further assistance.
Witnesses Are Thankful Responders Reached Him in Time
Several people commenting on the Sheriff’s Office’s post said they had actually watched the rescue unfold from shore. One person said the response initially looked like authorities were searching for somebody lost at sea before learning what had really happened, describing the situation as “so sad.”
Another witness said they were thankful for the lifeguards, police, and rescue personnel who responded. Others similarly praised the first responders, with one commenter simply calling them “brave.”
Whatever brought the man into the ocean that day, commenters largely seemed united around one thing: they’re glad people were willing to follow him out and bring him back.
