A Florida motorcyclist has been sentenced after authorities say he fled state troopers during a high-speed pursuit that reached roughly 150 mph on Interstate 95. The case stems from a February chase in Palm Beach County that ended when the rider crashed near Boca Raton.
Jose Manuel Gaviria Munoz, 24, pleaded guilty to two counts of reckless driving in Palm Beach County court. According to court records cited by CBS12, he was sentenced to 240 days in jail and received credit for 99 days already served.
The pursuit began after a Florida Highway Patrol trooper allegedly spotted Munoz riding a yellow Suzuki motorcycle while lane-splitting through traffic. Troopers also said the motorcycle’s license plate was tilted upward, making it harder to read.
When the trooper activated emergency lights and sirens, authorities say Munoz accelerated away instead of stopping. The resulting chase sent him southbound on I-95 at extremely dangerous speeds.
Troopers Say the Rider Hit 150 MPH
According to the Florida Highway Patrol affidavit, Munoz weaved through traffic while reaching speeds of around 150 mph. The pursuit continued along I-95 before ending near the Glades Road exit in Boca Raton.
Investigators said Munoz lost control of the Suzuki, struck a curb, and was thrown from the motorcycle. He was transported to JFK Hospital for treatment before being booked into the Palm Beach County Jail.
The crash brought the chase to an end without reported injuries to other motorists, though the speeds involved made the situation especially dangerous.
License Problems Added to the Case
Authorities said Munoz did not have a motorcycle endorsement, which is required in Florida to legally operate most motorcycles. Reports also indicate his driver’s license had been suspended multiple times before the chase.
Following his arrest, Munoz, described by authorities as a Colombian national, was placed on an ICE detainer. His criminal case in Palm Beach County proceeded with the reckless driving plea and jail sentence.
A Dangerous Reminder on Police Pursuits
High-speed motorcycle chases create enormous risk for riders, officers, and surrounding traffic. At 150 mph, reaction time nearly disappears, and even a small mistake can turn fatal.
This case ended with a jail sentence rather than a tragedy involving bystanders. Given the speeds involved, it could have easily ended much worse.
