A Florida man who was allegedly out past his probation curfew was arrested after a traffic stop turned up a stolen e-bike, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said on Oct. 5, 2026, at about 10:20 p.m., deputies stopped a U-Haul near Race Track Road and West Hillsborough Avenue because its rear taillights were not on.
The driver, identified as 37-year-old Peter Gaebel, apparently did not realize his taillights were not on. The traffic stop took a different turn when a deputy discovered Gaebel was on probation and was supposed to be home by 10 p.m.
Body camera footage shows Gaebel being removed from the U-Haul and placed in handcuffs. As a deputy asks whether he is on probation, Gaebel acknowledges that he is and knows he has a curfew.
Past Curfew
The deputy then tells Gaebel exactly why being on the road at that time was a problem.
“You’re not supposed to be out right now,” the deputy tells him. “Your curfew’s at 10 o’clock.”
The traffic stop happened about 20 minutes after Gaebel’s stated curfew. His jail record shows a violation of a probation hold under an Interstate Compact Agreement, with the record indicating the hold is from Texas.
The records also show Gaebel is being held at the Orient Road Jail with no bond listed on the overall booking. The jail record lists an Interstate Compact Agreement hold and notes that it is related to a Texas case.
A Stolen E-Bike
Deputies also found a stolen e-bike inside the U-Haul, along with marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Gaebel’s charges include possession of cannabis weighing more than 20 grams, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance. The jail record identifies the controlled substance as methamphetamine.
The cannabis charge carries a $1,500 bond, while the controlled substance charge carries a $2,500 bond. The paraphernalia charge has no bond associated with it.
Grand Theft Charge Added
Jail records also show Gaebel faces a third-degree grand theft charge involving property valued between $750 and $5,000. The offense date for that charge is listed as Sept. 27, making it separate from the Oct. 5 traffic stop.
The grand theft charge carries a $2,500 bond. The records identify it as an additional charge related to the same booking.
Gaebel was booked at the Orient Road Jail at 1:40 a.m. on Oct. 6. His arrest records list the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office as the arresting agency.
Gaebel is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
