A Florida man’s missing license plate turned into a much bigger problem after deputies pulled him over at a gas station and discovered more than four grams of fentanyl. As if the drug discovery wasn’t enough, a search of his vehicle also uncovered jewelry that investigators believe could be connected to a theft reported months earlier.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, deputies conducted the traffic stop on October 10, 2026, at approximately 6:27 a.m. The vehicle, driven by 35-year-old Michael Rosario, was displaying no license plate when deputies encountered it near East Bearss Avenue and North Florida Avenue in Tampa.

What began as a stopover for a missing tag quickly escalated when deputies discovered fentanyl on Rosario’s person. Authorities detained him before conducting an additional search of the vehicle, which led to another discovery.

Rosario was arrested and booked into the Falkenburg Road Jail later that afternoon, where jail records list four charges against him. Despite individual bond amounts appearing alongside several of those charges, his overall custody status is listed as no bond.

The Sheriff’s Office said deputies initially stopped Rosario because his vehicle was not displaying a license plate. Arrest records identify the location as 205 East Bearss Avenue, with Rosario’s arrest at 6:27 a.m. and his booking at 1:12 p.m.

During the stop, deputies discovered more than four grams of fentanyl in Rosario’s possession, resulting in a first-degree felony charge of trafficking in fentanyl involving four to 14 grams. His booking record also lists third-degree felony tampering with physical evidence, first-degree misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, and second-degree misdemeanor operating an unregistered vehicle.

According to the jail records, the tampering charge carries a listed bond of $2,500, while the paraphernalia and unregistered vehicle charges carry amounts of $500 and $150, respectively. The fentanyl trafficking charge has a listed bond of $0, and Rosario’s overall arrest status indicates that he remains in custody without bond.

Jewelry Discovery Could Connect Traffic Stop to Earlier Theft Investigation

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies also discovered jewelry inside Rosario’s vehicle that may be connected to a theft reported in July. Investigators have not confirmed that the items were stolen or provided additional details about the original theft, including where it occurred or who owned the jewelry.

The booking record does not list a theft-related charge among the four offenses associated with Rosario’s October 10 arrest. Authorities also have not explained the circumstances behind the tampering with physical evidence charge, leaving that particular allegation without further detail in the information released.

Rosario’s charges are listed under Hillsborough County court case number 26-CF-018063-A, and the Sheriff’s Office says additional charges may follow as the investigation continues. For now, what began with a vehicle missing its license plate has developed into a felony drug trafficking case, with investigators also examining whether the jewelry could connect Rosario’s traffic stop to an earlier theft.
